I don’t think it has to be a tax ID. You can buy wholesale with a seller’s permit for the state you live in. I have one. I use it for some purchases and also they’re required for selling at doll shows. I don’t know where you sell, but when you create a PayPal invoice there’s a space to enter the tax amount. You just have to Google what the current sales tax is for the state you’re shipping to.
With PayPal invoices yes, but how do you require immediate payment and send an invoice?
I only sell on reborns.com with PayPal and at doll shows with Square. I don’t know how you’d do it with other selling platforms. You can guesstimate the tax (choose a middle amount) and add it to the price if you don’t know where it’s going and put that money aside for tax time.
I think if you add extra to the price to cover sales tax it will increase the taxes you have to pay. Because the tax is based on the amount item sold for.
You are correct the sales tax is based on the price the item sold for, so it would be a little tricky and not all states require sales tax on internet purchases.
Okay, so just a little update, I’m in Colorado and I have registered for the new website. Here’s what I did, first I went to the secretary of state website, and I registered as a business (LLC) which was $50 then I went to get a sales/state tax license afterwards as I couldn’t get one without being a “business” and the sales tax license was $54 for my state and there was a temporary license, so I signed up for the new website with the license number and the pdf of license and now I’m waiting for approval TBH, I wasn’t going to bother much with it but the silicone kits are what got me because of the price and all the discounts on everything. Also, I’ve always filed taxes on the reborn income so I figured if I am a “business” at least I can get reduced taxes by showing my material cost receipts. And while I was typing this, BB just emailed me and I’m approved. Wow, they are fast!
I wonder how they determine who to send an application to? I really don’t know for sure if it is worth it for me because I have slowed down painting. Not because I want to, but not enough time. For what I purchase maybe staying on the retail site and paying full price is OK. I cannot find the announcement, but pretty sure we could buy the same things on both sites. The differences was sales taxes and special discounts. On the other hand, I already have a spreadsheet set up to track things and a bank account only for business. It is the complexity of sales tax for different states that seems hard.
This may seem like a silly question, but I don’t have much experience with the business side of things.
When charging tax, do you charge the sales tax based on where the purchaser lives or where you (the store) are based?
When traveling through Oregon for instance, I made purchases, yet paid no sales tax even though I’m a resident of California.
If the sales tax is based on the sellers location it would simplify matters an awful lot, as you would only have to know how much to charge based on your own states sales tax rates.
I’m not entirely sure, I believe with a sales tax license, you o my charger the person sales tax if they live in your same state…I’m probably completely wrong but I remember reading something saying sales taxes would apply to people who are purchasing in the same state as where the license was submitted it is confusing because as you say, when you travel to different states, you have to follow their tax laws.
Life is busy and complicated enough I’m not doing it. I love the sculpts that I buy from MacPhersons, dolls by Sandie ect. It’s all good.
I’m not sure what to do since I’m a travel nurse and my location changes all the time. So do I use an Iowa wholesale license and hope they’ll sell to me when my shipping address is in Florida or Montana or wherever?
Response must have been overwhelming??
Or they are trying to get rid of inventory before they switch?
From all my reading that is what I understand about Georgia. If I sell something to someone in GA I have to collect GA sales tax based on the sales tax rate in my County because I am selling from my address. If I sell to any other state in which I do not have a Nexus (and I do not have one outside GA) then I do not have to collect sales taxes on those internet sales. However, if I go to a trade show then I will have to collect the sales tax amount for that state on goods sold at the show because there are different rules about that.
I have been reading a lot today. I guess if I am going to have to be reporting all sales I made I need to get the Seller’s Permit in case I do sell to someone here in GA. I have not sold a doll here in GA this year.
I do think the responses were over whelming but I think they are keeping both websites and will still offer discounts to the regular site as well, I think the other website will just have deeper discounts, I could be wrong though lol
I’m with you. I’m only going to reborn for fun. It has become way to complicated and stressful to sell for me. I hope to keep all my friends on here and love to show my babies to fellow artist. I’m working on Ruby right now and loving taking my time and I don’t have to please no one but me. Maybe in a couple of years when I’m overwhelmed with two many babies I might decide to but for now I’m just gonna enjoy my hobby!
I still haven’t gotten an email either. How do the discounts for the wholesale website work?
I got email invite but I won’t be able to I’m on SSI and I paint as a hobby. And I won’t be able to buy for awhile as Friday I had to get car towed home and got to save for head gasket
I just got online to get a form and it says it is $199. to receive in 3-4 day and standard 8-10 days is $169. for the certificate in Kentucky. I thought it said free at first.
You may be on a fake site. There are a lot of them out there that look legit only to come down and want to charge you money. One I found that looked legit wanted me to pay $249. I got out and tried again going through the IRS site and the next message I got was that they were not open (on weekend) so I have to wait til next week to try again.
