QUESTION: What Attracts You To A Kit?

I got a question for ya…Out of the hundreds of kits out there, what attracts you to it? Is it the artist/sculptor who made it? The size?

What attracts me to a particular kit is:

  1. The expressions. I love juicy lips, and big smiles
  2. I like full limbs

The prototype picture first, then I look at the hands n feet. I prefer full limbs also, but still do the 3/4 limb kits.

Yea, i still will do full limbs if the face is cute

I learned to not trust prototypes lol, I bought a kit and the kit fave me a fit. I look at the head shape and try to find a picture of the plain sculpt. Love a nice shape head, not to round, button nose and I love scrunched faces.

I look at a lot of kits daily, and i find that i like unique kits. I know every kit is different, but to me, a lot of kits start to look similar to each other. I find that kits with cute expressions, cute lips and eyes, and not too big faces im drawn to more. Oh, and i loooove fat legs lol. I dont really like kits under 20" and im more into toddler sizes bc i love dressing them.

I look for kits with a good brow bone showing, I’ve come to love those.
I’ll also look at things like detail in the ears and limbs. I hate it when a pretty kit is ‘ruined’ by unrealistic ears or something.
Other than that, I look if things are proportionate. No eyes that are too far apart and such.
I can be very picky haha. But I always want to see the blank kit first. Prototypes can be misleading.

Exactly! I hate eyes that are too far apart too. And YES…prototypes can be very misleading sometimes. I will see one that looks amazing, then see another one, and then get totally uninterested completely

I like to see a blank kit too. I have bought dolls because I like the prototype and then see the kit and am disappointed by the ears or the shape of the head.

Ugh, i agree. Example: I love Chanel prototyp bc I love juicy baby lips…but her head is so bulbous lol. I dont like her head, but I love her face.

YESSSSSS! I had that happen to me and then I didn’t want to root the head!

I like unique kits, sweet sleepers, and nice realistic limbs.

Me too. However, I think the blank Shyann kit is not attractive at all. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a painted Shyann that was not pretty but the blank kit👎🏻 I’m glad I had seen so many lovely Shyanns or I may have not been able to paint the kit.

Yesss… lesson learned about checking the blank kit before buying! I fell in love with a prototype and bought, never bothering to look at the blank kit. That’s how I learned how much contouring, highlighting, and creative photography angles can change things. Never again.

I look at the prototypes, then I look at the blank kit to see how I envision it done my way. I like serene or smiling expressions and detailed hands and feet. I’m not a fan of babies that have scrunchy faces that look like they’re in pain.

I love a beautifully shaped head, especially the ones with the soft spot. I also like full lips.

I think how much they look like my own babies is the biggest thing for me so far. Some that I love look different from my own babies, but there is usually at least one similar feature.

I do a lot of newborn sleepers because they look so realistic, but lately I’m finding myself more drawn to kits with an open-eyed alert expression. I’m loving the 21"-22" size with full limbs too. Need to see the bare kit if possible because I don’t like dealing with poorly done ears, non-existent bone structure, or creases that look like slices in the clay. I’m picky, but the outcome is worth it!

Full limbs, special lips, a sweet expression, a reminder of my own babies, a reminder of someone else’s baby, perfect sculpting that makes me jealous… I could go on. Full limbs with few exceptions…

I look for open eyes and hands. I prefer 3/4 limbs if I am going to be holding her and full limbs for posing, pics and display. Though none of that is a deal breaker if I am looking for a certain look or expression for an Alternative or Character.
