I made Ethon back in August 2018, I just noticed his vinyl has turned yellow, in places including his head. I’ve started stripping him but it’s the vinyl not anything on the vinyl. I’ve never had this happen on any of my reborns and I have much older ones in my collection
That is so weird! So sorry to hear that.
yep no idea whats caused it, I’m not sure how long it’s been like that as he’s just been displayed on a shelf.
It’s weird ! I have mine here but it is ok, no yellow. Is it the vinyl or some kind of transfer ?
its the vinyl, you can see it’s yellow inside and out, and he’s not been near anything bright. I have no idea how long it’s been that way. He’s been sitting upright on a shelf with 2 others and it’s facing away from the light and the others. It’s in the middle of his face, middle of his upper thigh as well
that is very upsetting!
It sounds like it’s definitely faulty vinyl! Until I started reborning I never realized how sensitive vinyl was!
It must be, there’s no other reason I can see why it’s turned yellow from inside to outside. I am in the middle of stripping him but I dont think anything I do will fix it, I wasn’t happy with his colour before, so all I can do is make him look as good as I can and just keep holding onto him. I did message Cassie but don’t know if she’ll come up with any solution.
This is not something we need to have to add to our list of concerns. What if a baby we sell turns yellow and the customer comes back upset and wanting a refund? Yikes!
exactly, thank goodness I never sold him. I’ve stripped one leg and 2 arms so far, and the entire vinyl is looking a pale yellow just with darker patches. I would say there is something wrong in the vinyl of mine, just hope there aren’t others out there the same but I assume they’re made in batches.
I have to wonder too if the vinyl had a reaction to being heat set that showed up later?
In all the years I’ve been reborning, I’ve never had any happen to my bubs.
My first thought was natural oils coming from your hands and discolouring the vinyl over time because of it being in places that kits are held to paint but then I read it’s in the middle of the limbs/head too, so strange, it can’t be the paint or it would be all over, same with the heating ect.
I recently had a Timothy kit, when I got it and inspected it, it looked perfect, I put it back in the box and on a shelf and it stayed there for a month, when I took it out again to paint it there was a dark purple mark on the top of the head about the size of a finger tip, it wasn’t paint because I don’t use dark purple and it almost had a metallic look to it, I cleaned it off but it left a yellow stain, no idea what caused it but I know it wasn’t me!
As we all know, China has not been making the vinyl kits up to the standards that we are all used to. Something in their ingredients has changed to cause all the issues we have seen here with the BB kits. I am just wondering about the quality of the kits we are getting in now and how they will respond to time.
Yeah its not from my hands, I actually have very dry skin always have. His vinyl does feel very different to any other vinyl I have painted. It kinda has like a rubbery feel to it. I have even applied the 10% acne cream to it, even though it is right through the vinyl to the inside and that hasn’t done anything. I’ll continue to strip him back and repaint him but I suspect it will just come through again only time will tell.
The entire vinyl has turned yellow, it’s just darker in a few patches. So after I finish stripping him, which is no easy task, as I have to take his hair out and his eyes and they’re cut and sealed inside. His whole face is very yellow, there is something very wrong with this vinyl. I thought what I will do is put a thin layer of matte varnish on the bare kit first to seal it, then paint him again and micro root. Unfortunately, I don’t have much varnish left and I have other reborns coming so I will have to put him aside until I can buy more matte, that won’t be until next year. It will be interesting to see if sealing him first stops it coming through again although only time will tell…
Can you paint him as AA or biracial baby?
No he has pencil thin lips he wouldn’t suit it, but it wouldn’t matter what colour you made him, as when those yellow patches appeared the paint like disappeared I’m not sure how to describe it but it was just yellow so it would look worse if that happened to a darker skin, though I really dont see him as biracial. The varnish layer was in tact, so if I start with a matte varnish hopefully the yellow won’t be able to penetrate through to the paint
I would be sending both Cassie Brace and the dealer you bought the kit from photos of this baby so they can see what happened. Not as an accusatory thing but as information they need to know in case it happens to other kits.
A thought occured to me. I know some where along the way people were advising to mix linseed oil in with their Genesis paints to make them go on more smoothly? Did you do this? Just curious because in the many years ago it was found that mixing linseed oil in with regular oil paints (when we were reborning with those) could make the coloring go yellow over time.
