Honest opinions. Should I?

Hey ladies.

So I’ve been working on teddy bears and ive sold two to friends. But none otherwise.
Its going into summer and there’s a whole list as to why people aren’t buying them. So I try not to take it personally.

But im wondering…..I still have my reborn supplies. A few sculpts. Genesis paints. Hair. All of it.

I used to sell pretty quickly for between 350$ and 800$ depending on the sculpt. I quit when people kept stealing my photos and scamming with them. Then the knockoffs came and seemed like cockroaches coming out of the wall.

Should I get back into reborning? Its never been a get rich quick thing. I know that. But are dolls still selling?

My husband says I should wait because eventually he thinks the market will shift and he doesn’t want me to sell my dolls cheap just to make a sale.

But maybe they could bring in money to pay for car repairs?

For reference here are some of my sold babies.

I think it would be a wise thing to do. Dolls do seem to sell better than bears. There seems to be a larger market for them especially at the price point that you are looking at.

People want Walmart prices for my bears. Thats not possible even if i wanted to. But they do the same with reborns. Imo.

Since you already have the supplies then I’d give it a try. Can’t hurt!

Your babies are gorgeous and I think you should paint a couple and see how it goes?

I dont think im good enough at bear making to sell them. Or maybe im asking too high for them. But I’ve only had a friends ask for them and no activity on my etsy or my bearpile. X

My best bet is to sell the bear making supplies and it least get the money out of it.

Your bears are absolutely good enough!! I’m wondering if it’s just getting some sold and building a reputation? I also, in looking at Bearpile see that many bears are made by people overseas so it may be more of a thing over there??

Anyway. I agree with the others. You babies are adorable and if you have the supplies…you will not be out anything other than your time….and your membership fee at reborns when they are ready to sell!!!

It’s definitely worth a shot!

Thank you. I am feeling sorry for myself. But im done now. You actually said the same thing my husband said. Its just about reputation.

So what im going to do is get a small tripod and try videos of the process of making each one. That might help build social media which could help with reputation. I also dug through my patterns and found a dragon pattern so maybe that will bring some variety to my work too.

I took a minute to feel sorry for myself. But I dont have time to stay there. Im not giving up bear making yet.

But I may have Raymond dig out my reborn supplies from storage. Once hes, home. Hes been picking up all the overtime he can get this week.

For me, people around me don’t know the price of reborns, fundraisers go for less than I paid, marketplace is worthless, but when I list on Reborns.com the customers are educated with art and price. Your bears are amazing, is bearpile the place to sell or is there something else?

You can try, but dolls aren’t selling well, either. People expect toy prices for a piece of art.

I personally think it’s best to make dolls or bears because you want to, as a hobby. Doing it with the expectation to make money just isn’t working that well anymore.

I have a bearpile. But I do need to list more

I didn’t start dolls or bear making with the expectation to make money. I made reborns before Bountiful Baby even existed. Back when we used Walmart dolls and stencil cream paints. It has never been a money making venture.
But I also dont want to lose money. I dont want to have to practically give my bears away after weeks of work on them.
Im not expecting to get rich. Believe me ive made reborns long enough to know thats not gonna happen.
But wanting to not lose money doesn’t seem like a big ask.

Amen……people need to be compensated for their labor in addition to the cost of supplies.

Not an unrealistic expectation at all

I would go ahead with the dolls

Being that you already have the supplies to make dolls you would only lose by not making them. Your dolls are very nice and you will make something on them. My sister sells crochet online and she used to get panicky when something wasn’t moving quickly. I. would tell her its not like baked goods that are going to go bad if not sold fast enough. The right buyer will come along and be moved enough by your work to buy it.

Right.

Crochet is amazing to me. I dont have the hand eye coordination to do it but one of my friends does. I traded her a teddy bear for a highland cow she made.

She definitely got the better on this shared work:smiling_face_with_three_hearts::nauseated_face:. Not meaning to be ugly, just the truth as I see it. It is extremely cute, but you did put a lot more money and time in yours. As far as your hand and eye coordination, I’m not sure I agree with you.

Lol. Thanks. Shes newish to crochet so i wanted to support her. She gave the bear,to her grandmother for her birthday. She got Freddie.

I always support my friends when I.can and her grandma loved the bear so it was worth it.

Thats what my husband said. But im okay with it. Freddie went to someone who loves him. In the end I just wanted to make her happy.
In the future I will for sure ask for $$ but I’ve been dealing with a lot lately and I just wanted to focus on someone else’s happiness. If that makes sense.
