Almost done with my first baby

I don’t know how to feel about this. I don’t hate it but I don’t like it either, looks… Battered? Poor thing. I had to make it all red-purple-ish because that was the only way to make his dark arm blend it with the rest. And the eyebrows… Boy, oh boy, never would I have thought that chocolate on paper would be yellow on vynil. I just ordered a dark brown prisma pencil and hopefully I can fix those yellow stains  I still have to paint creases and nails and darken the lips.
So so so many paint stains… All of this because my apartment is small and I can only work on half of the kitchen table, so the vynil parts are all resting on spots that might be stained with wet paint.
Definitely a Boo Boo baby, can’t wait to somehow sell him at the price of what I spent on him… So disappointed in myself.

I think that’s a pretty good color match. Are you done with his painting or is he still a WIP? Some light flesh layers would lighten him up.

It takes time and you will get better. Some people have it right off the bat. Others it takes a couple of babies, but you eventually get to where you’re going. Reborning calls for a lot of patience, some tears, and a few tossed heads :joy:. Here is a pic of my first and one of my babies from this year. Also here is a link if I can figure out how to place it if a prisma color chart. It helps. Can’t wait to see your next babies.

My first baby was so ugly I can’t even show it. I only kept a few pics of it and threw it away. That was 7 years ago and I’ve done around 60 babies, and practice has truly helped me stay encouraged to keep going. Your first baby looks way, way better than mind did.

If that doll would be mine I would strip it and apply all what I learned already to make it better. Especially if you have a desire to sell. I would be terrified that the buyer after seeing it would do a chargeback.

Lol my first too. It’s still here in a box hidden deep in my closet :joy:

You shouldn’t be disappointed in yourself. He’s not terrible for a first attempt. Reborning takes time and effort to improve on. If you truly don’t like him enough to get rid of him, I would take the advice offered here and strip him down to a blank canvas so that I could save money and practice some more. Each baby painted teaches us something new and many times it’s what not to do & what we can do better next time.

You’ve only just begun learning and you can’t expect anything close to prototype quality as a beginner. Very few people ever reach that level, even after years and hundreds of babies painted, so don’t be so hard on yourself. :slightly_smiling_face:

It’s a real pain that some prismacolor pencils change color when baked. I had that issue with a baby as well. @dinokc can vouch for the fact that his hair is a horrible orange mess as he’s definitely what I call a “hat baby”.

Many of us use puppy training pads across our painting surface as they’re absorbent and light colored so we can see where paint is at and avoid staining kits. We also use various things as racks to keep our freshly painted vinyl from touching anything as it dries. Hopefully these tips can help you too.

This was my first baby. We kept her in the family, but I’ve definitely grown with each doll made.

JMO Don’t be dissapointed in yourself. I think you did an awesome job for your first baby. I actually like him/her but I am weird. After you do some shading and fine tuning he will be even better. I love high color babies and this baby falls into that category. I also think you should keep him her to compare to your future babies. What kind of paint do you use?

After my first baby I got a ugly kit on sale and made it my test kit! I abused that poor thing because I wasn’t afraid to mess her up and I learned ALOT in the process :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: my intention was never to sell but to make babies. I currently have over 60 kits. I did sell one BB realborn Darren asleep for $450. But selling has never been my number one priority because I am too much of a perfectionist, and I always worry customers won’t be happy with my work. So I keep practicing. Maybe some day I will sell on a regular basis who knows but for the time being I am happy to just paint pretty babies. You’ll get there… but the ONLY way to learn is to try try try and then try again

Just a thought, but it seems most people keep the first baby. It is kind of a tradition, it seems. But, what it does is it allows you to measure your later work by the first and you can see how far you have come.

I didn’t keep my first. It IS in a place I can see whenever I want, but I am going to be selling the others, other than special ones I make for whomever.

Lol say what you want but I love him so much even in his hats :joy::joy: he’s so precious to me that I cuddle on him daily.

(deleted my first reply because it was showing my thigh too much in the picture and could have been considered inappropriate)

I applied a thin green wash to neutralize the excessive red color but the baby looks purple now… Should I neutralize the purple too, or just apply light skin tone layers? The baby looks sunburned to me!

I use my personal reborn doll to compare it with the baby I’m making, so I’m okay with not keeping my first one. I’m also going to need the money to buy more supplies and kits as I’m still a student and only have a small part time job :pensive:

I’m planning on buying the head of Reine by Ping Lau to use it for rooting practice, it should be only 20 euros on the website I buy my supplies from. I also am a perfectionist unfortunately, and hate the fact that this baby is not looking the way it does in my head.

So glad someone likes him  I use acrylic paints but I’m going to switch to professional air dry paints as soon as I manage to sell this baby for a low price (not going to charge more than 150 for obvious reasons)

Let me just say that your first baby is beautiful! Kudos to you  I’m going to buy a drying rack ASAP and be more careful with Prisma pencils. This baby is still a WIP and if I don’t manage to make him look somewhat decent, I’ll strip him and start all over again

I’m sure it wasn’t as ugly as you think, maybe we’re all a bit too harsh on ourselves, me included. 60 babies sounds like a lot of work to a beginner like me! I’m sure your babies look fantastic now
