All pencil this time, no paint

Usually I do prisma pencils followed by paint when I do hair ~ this time, it’s all pencil, no paint and I actually like the look:

That’s awesome. I love how you even got the thinner patch of hair on the back of his head too x

Thank you for noticing! Took me a while and I started over a time or two but in the end, I was happy with how it turned out.

Thank you! I’m working on Clyde right now and trying to do the same thing on his hair. It’s hard, because I’m used to penciling in sort of an outline and then painting, so I’m an old dog trying to learn a new trick.

I did when I did Kate’s. I had my electric sharpener right next to me to keep it easier. :0)

I keep them very sharp and sharpen them after just a few strokes. I have 12 of them, so I work with each one, sharpen, and continue. AND…it’s just prisma and BB’s thinning medium. That’s what gives the effect of softer hair and not such harsh lines. I draw the lines, then go over them with a skinny brush dipped in thinner. It’s been fun learning something new!

Ooh nice tip, Karen! I didn’t brush over my pencils on my baby. Just pounced over it. I bet that looks cool up close! Did you pounce over it too after you brushed?

No pouncing at all, just brushing.

Great job Karen,️I purchased some prisma pencils. I thought I would try on the Byron I’m working on. He has such a small head it might be easier for me to learn. Any recommendations or do’s and or do not’s? I’m doing a golden blond color, maybe root some hair over it.

Byron is a cutie; I loved working on him! Oh…mine turned out to be a girl, though…LOL

My only recommendation is keep your pencils sharp, sharp, sharp. That’s how you get the little hairs to look like hairs instead of pencil marks. I do one layer, go over it with a brush/thinning medium, bake…do another layer, brush/thinning medium, bake. I have at least 4 layers on Thomas’ head. I just kept building layers till I got the look I wanted. If you want finer, barely there hair of course stop at one or two layers.

Also, vary the pressure on the pencil to give a shaded, thicker look. And that rubbed off part on the back of his head? Yeah, I rubbed it off, blending it in as I went.

Have FUN…as long as you don’t bake, you can rub it off and start over.

I think I would like to try that at first until I learn how to draw the hair.
