@bbsupport, just wondering why? Would it be possible to make them solid? No need to weight them and messing around with fine glass beads, which could be spilled if a child or dementia patient takes the doll apart. Of-course head needs to be hollow to seal rooted hair and add magnets.
I wonder if it’s because it uses less vinyl to make the sculpt and therefore cheaper for BB
My idea is that it is more fun to be able to weight your baby as you want. We are all different in our opinions on things. But, I, for instance, can’t handle a heavy baby. Also, the dolls in the stores are not solid. Not saying that there are NO solid limbed babies, but most are not.
Maybe it wouldn’t be as flexible then…
I am sure that vinyl cost is very small amount in the price of the kit. Soft vinyl would be still soft and flexible as the fingers are now despite being solid. There might be problem with curing though.
It would cost more vinyl, so kit prices would go up. I also think it would get pretty heavy, and you’d still have to weight the body.
Not only would there be an increased vinyl cost, shipping would probably be extra as well. I actually got a doll kit one time with solid arms and hollow legs… those arms were a pain to deal with because I couldn’t hang them on the drying rack. Wonder if it’s possible to pour something in there that would solidify and and add weight without the glass beads.
I was thinking about pouring in some of the caulking stuff, but i am not sure if it is runny enough to go right down into bent limbs.
True, shipping for the kits could be marginally more, but as I find most kits are just over the lower rate, it actually would very likely make no difference. Another benefit would be that the limbs would not arrive squashed flat.
Vinyl as a raw material is cheap; most of the cost is the work that goes into making the sculpt and making the molds and then distributing the kits singly or in small numbers around the world.
I can see the problem of not having holes to stick them on the drying racks. But just small holes at the top,1/2 an inch wide and inch+ or so deep, would do.
