I’m definitely in the market but the big question is what qualities should I be looking for and what red flags should I be on the lookout for? Also to those of you that sell how many questions is TOO many… I don’t want to be a pain in the booty but I also don’t want the seller wondering well does she like the doll?
It’s best to first figure out your budget.
Also do you want sleeping or awake, what type of hair etc
Then search for an artist whose work you like if your going for a custom or several photos of a ready to ship baby. Up close, good lighting. PayPal goods and services will help in case anything happens…no friends and family unless you know the person well.
Safety photos to make sure the doll belongs to that person
Ask what paint baby is made with and what it’s weighted with.
Your spending good money so you want it to be the right baby, so price is my first go to. No need to go further if it’s more then I can afford ya know?
This is what I always look at as an artist and a buyer:
- #1 Eyebrows - if eyebrows painted beautiful and realistic - it’s a great artist;
- Finger separation on joint fingers - if they are realistically shaded;
- Painted or rooted hair - how well and realistic is painted and how well is rooted;
- Nails - how neat and thing the nails painted;
- How realistically ears are shaded;
- Details like capillaries;
- How realistically mottling is done;
- Close-up photos and no cover parts, like mittens on hands or paci on all pictures;
- I personally don’t like over blushed babies or babies with red/ inflamed creases that look like they hands and feet were tied. I don’t like cuts and scratches as you will look at the baby whos cuts and scratches will never heal.
Good luck to find your perfect baby!
Yeah I don’t like scratches either. There is an artist on reborns.com that I saw a few days back that if I can ever think of the nursery name again I will definitely see about getting a doll from. Her artwork is so unique they remind me of vintage dolls. Not a style I thought I would go with but they had me intrigued.
I do not like scratches or milk bumps… I always make sure to look closely!
You can always mark a doll ‘as Favorite’ so you can find what you like easy.
I know a couple of artists that paint in that style on Reborns. Somehow I think you are talking about Donna Rich - Aunt Daisy Nursery.
Look around and see what style you like. Try to not get distracted by pretty outfits or props, you’re shopping for a doll, not clothing.
Look for artists that have a lot of close up pictures of their work, showing things like the face, hair, hands, feet, etc. Check to see if there isn’t a part of the doll that’s always covered up in every picture. I’ve seen someone sell a doll that had either a hand or a pacifier covering the mouth in all pictures. Turned out the mouth just looked horrible.
Also keep the size of the reborn in mind. A 16" one may look adorable, but will be harder to shop for.
Could be Gail Starr, Donna Rich, or LaDonna Briggs. Those are the big names in vintage style
The ladies have given you great advice.Also I would include a good communicator,someone who can answer all your questions,write the questions down beforehand.Be sure to ask about when the doll will be available and the shipping date and tracking numbers.You may call it’pain in the booty " it’s being a educate consumer and a good reborn Mommie.Good luck.
Thank you everyone. I found a doll I absolutely loved earlier today that I am hoping to bring home very soon! Wasn’t expecting to find a doll This soon but I really liked her work so I’m jumping on the opportunity.
Yay! Can we see a pic?
Haven’t purchased just yet I’m working on a few minor things on my end I’m just secretly crossing my fingers she doesn’t sell beforehand. If she does that is totally fine however I would just be happy the artist got a
sale and I will venture on and find the next doll.She’s so cute!! I hope she stays available for you!
