I ordered the precious gift and Jaclyn kits last week from bb. I now need to know what all do I need to start the reborning process? I was thinking maybe the small set of 8 Genesis paints. I don’t really wanna spend to much until I know I’m gonna be good at reborning. Do I need the dril, knives, toothpicks to begin? I do have a passion for reborning. I’ve been researching for months. My 8 year old autistic daughter doesn’t play well with other children but she loves dolls. I thought if I can do this it will be cheaper than buying her babies.please let me know if you can help me in anyway. Is there a cheaper place to order the paint brushes and paints, and what should I weigh it with? I see bb glass beads are $2.09 a lb. Is that about as cheAP as I’m gonna find them?
Yes that is the cheapest also get these paints is what I recommend and folow this awesome tutorial
https://www.joomag.com/magazine/precious-little-babies-free-painting-tutorial-painting-tutorial-2014/0336296001397902063 good luck!! The paint brushes seem to be the best deal at dolls so real. But the paints on that list for a 1/2 is better at bb so mix and match
Thank you so much for that info. I’m gonna check it out. I’m so excited and nervous too. I bought the kits on sale last week,so if I mess them up its not a big deal. Is their a certain baby that is easier to start with?
None of the realborns to start. Lots of folds and such.
I’m so glad you said that bc I been looking at the realborns and I’m so in love with most of them. I hope to be able to succeed doing this bc I want a realborn so bad but theirs no way I could afford to buy one already finished. I know it’s gonna cost a lot to begin this process but hopefully it’ll be cheaper in the long run. My daughter is wanting one for Christmas and her bed is Jan 4 so theirs just no way I could buy them that close together. Can I use my regular oven or do I need to purchase something different to bake them in ?
You probably shouldn’t use the same oven you cook in. Some people do, but others have had reactions to the fumes and they stick to the oven. A NuWave oven seems to be the most popular option. Some people set it up outside or in a garage so there are no fumes in the house. I use air dry paints so no worries about fumes. You can get lots of the small stuff-makeup sponges, q-tips, toothpicks, etc. at the dollar store if you have one. You can get good brushes at Michael’s in their art supply department. Depending on the age of your daughter you might want to consider painted hair or a bald baby. If not, get good mohair. It’s so much easier to work with.
I had the same questions a year ago as you do wanted to go as cheap as possible until i knew if i liked it .You will.Trust me.Even your first effort will be not bad to pretty good.
These are basics for reborning
kit
body
plugs
Id buy a table top magic chef oven.it comes with the extender ring which you need and isnt too expensive .Not good to bake vinyl in your home oven.
Home Depot has them for about $35 around christmas or 55 i think other times of the year.
They run cooler so buy a thermometer.i have to set mine at 300 not 265. to get 265 but ive had good luck. with it in constant use.
paint starter kit s good
id buy yellow ochre and burnt umber too
Ive used them often to make skin more realistic.especially the yellow.
oderless thinner Gamsol is good from Hobby Lobby
.Makeup wedges …to put paint on
Q tips… for cleaning small tight areas.
.toothpicks
Brushes of course and make sure you have one or 2 0 small brushes and a few mop brushes .
You can but a package of them various kinds walmart even.
when all painted then you move on to hair.
.Prisma pencils work well for eyebrows and i guess paint or prisma for hair
.My first i used prisma but i I always root now except eyebrows
Polyfil for body
glass beads or plastic pellets for weighing.
nylons to put beads in for body i use plastic gloves for beads in head.
.Zip ties for tying limbs and head on .
although the bodies come with zip or string ties .youll need more for mistakes.
I watched customdollbabys.com videos on reborning on youtube she takes every step in different videos .You will like this series.
.Id watch before you start your first doll as she may mention things you need i didnt add in this.
Kim is slow and very detailed so easy to follow
i watched AS i painted the first one too. Gave me more confidence .
. hair …Rooting … moair
E6000 works well as Glue for hair. if you root. but it stinks.
Rooting needles I use 42 crown to start
It all adds up at first to start reborning but then you dont need much but bodies and kits for a good while
Youve bought so much youll for sure want to do more than one baby!
… GOOD LUCK !
I bought some glass beads on ebay.Make sure its from someone who says for reborning but i gave gotten them from BB too .Their price is not bad if they have a sale Youll probably use about 4 lbs for 1 baby maybe 4.5 lbs to feel like a newborn. you dont need 7 lbs .Its dead weight which is heavier than live weight.
Where are you located? Are you in the USA? you can get a lot of the supplies you need at Michaels, Joann’s, or Hobby Lobby. You can also use the steel BB’s from Walmart to weight the baby if you want to see if you like the hobby before you invest a lot of money in it. Cosmetic wedges you can get just about anywhere, paint brushes at any of the craft stores. If it turns out you like the hobby you can then begin to invest in bulk glass beads, etc. The little starter paint set is fine from BB but you might want to add Burnt Umber and Yellow Ochre (if they are not included) they are pretty important colors. Also most of us use Mona Lisa Odorless Thinner, Hobby Lobby carries that too. Good Luck!!
I have lots of good finds in my Etsy shop. Including a starter pack with everything you need except paint & brushes. You can use nail brushes, which are cheap, but they won’t last as long.
Here’s my shop:
Here’s the starter pack:
