As we grow as artist we begin to change.Oneof my biggest changes was less paint layers. My second one is smaller and lighter eyebrows…Anyone else wants to share.
I used fake eyelashes at first.
More color! When I first started, my babies lacked color except for blushed cheeks. I was so afraid of messing up and overdoing it. They looked very dolly. Now I’m not afraid of more intense mottling, lots of shading/undertones, and blushing. But I love more intensely painted babies in general.
Still do…lol
Yess I understand
Well the biggest thing that I have changed was to not compare my work to others and just do my thing. I don’t ask for critiques because my photos, most of the time, do not show my true baby. Ex. my Saskia has purple eyes and purple combi hair but the eyes look blue and the hair looks gray.
My painting style changes and improves with every baby.
My first dolls had barely any color. I was afraid of doing too much.
Now I got different mottle colors (I never would have tried yellow at first), undertones, more blushing, actually visible veins…
They definitely look a lot better for it.
I was very afraid of blue at first- I used it in my vein mix and shading, but that was it. Now I have a shade of blue that I use as a mottle and it adds so much depth.
I use more color now.
My first baby had such thick skin. In a terrible way! Lol I covered up all the details I’d taken so long to create! Then I just made a bunch of green and blue zombies ♀️ for awhile, so that was really fun. Couldn’t mess them up, really. Now I’m following a tutorial for a realistic baby. So far, so good!
Yes dont compare work…
Grreat idea
All hard work
Will try it
We paint all so different each time
The use of burnt umber really helped me change my ways. My first 6 babies were very pale.
I also use more mottling and more colors over all (purple, crimson, red, ultramarine blue, vein blue, yellow, green, burnt umber, pink, etc)
- OH! Biggest change for me is the direction I lay the head to root. Thanks to Jacky Kramer
I’m still a work in progress myself. I think I have started adding more color to the skin , such as burnt umber and raw sienna. Im trying to warm them up and be more realistic on details. I keep changing up the order of my layers also.
Do you mean the way she points her needle toward herself when rooting rather than away? I tried it briefly and got frustrated, so went back to pointing it away. But if there’s a benefit to switching I’ll try again!
A big game- changer for me was using pastels for creases. I also use them for smoothing out darker complexions.
Yes. Point the neck opening away from you and the needle toward you. I can now root faster, and no sore wrist.
Make sure your needle is angled and follow your rooting map lines. The way you hold the needle should follow the lines. Work from the bottom of the section and go up (the swirl is the last part, the “Top” of the sections)
Another thing for me is… I DO NOT use the mapping pen… it stained one of my dolls… and was a Pain to get off.
So now I map lightly with a like colored prisma pencil
Thanks @jlesser! I’ve watched her tutorial twice and found it super helpful- just have to someday finish painting so I can try it out…
I bought one of the pens she uses too- thank you for the heads up!
