Looking for some input on what works,of course that can be a matter of opinion.I have used Prisma pencils for painting hair a couple times, but would love to know what colors or color mixtures you all use for the actual painting. Curious about both air dry & Genesis paints for the hair. Are the Genesis easier to work with for painting hair? Also what brushes do you use & where do you typically get them?
I use Baby FX paints. For dark brown to brown black hair I use the Brow & Ethnic color. The more concentrated you mix it the closer to black brown you will get. Natural Brown is a good color for a neutral brown. Then from there you can use lighter shades of color for highlighting or mix some of the same paints in less pigmented strength to go lighter. I mix my paint with just Slow Dry (or Jo Sonjas Retarder can substitute for the Baby FX Slow Dry). This gives me more working time with the paint so I can correct mistakes quickly. Once I like the look, force dry it with a hair dryer then move on to the next layer of painting. When done, the hair needs to cure a couple days and then must be final sealed very well. When using a lot of Slow Dry/Retarder in your paints like this it is important they are sealed well. I like to use Genesis Satin Varnish to final seal my hair because I like the lines I can get from it for texture using a stiff brush and I also like the slight sheen it leaves on the hair making it pop. However, I have also sealed the hair with the Baby FX Final Sealer alone (do not mix the shine reducer in it for hair) or you can use the Baby FX Subtle Shine Varnish. Both products leave a nice subtle sheen with the Subtle Shine varnish leaving a bit more sheen.
I use Genesis. I mix the color I’m looking for to paint. Each time I’ve painted hair it’s a different shade. I use burnt umber and ultra marine blue to prevent it looking orange if I want a nice brown color. If I’m wanting something darker I add Mars black.
I also use a really thin liner with most of the hairs removed to get a nice thin line.
Thank you both!! This was really helpful. I may try both methods to see which one works best for me. I have some thin liner brushes and will use those. Thank you ladies again
