Trying to dye mohair

ok been washing and getting some mohair ready to dye. I will be going for a medium blond. This started out as raw mohair. I washed with dawn dish soap 4 times rinsed 4 more times. it feels really good and soft no more waxey feel or look. it is almost pure white with a little blond to it.
My biggest question the cut ends to about 1 or so inches from tip it is very pale blond or almost white, about an inch from tip is a little darker When i dye it will it even up or will the tips always be darker.
I have only dye before for faries with purple and pinks.
and will dye from walmart work?

No your darker ends will always be darker. It is okay though because real hair has different shades in it. Also, most good rooters know to cut the mohair and mix the coloring to get that more natural look.

I do not recommend people hair dye. Years ago we did it that way, myself included, and I do know from experience it can fade with time. Also people hair dye is more prone to not come out well on mohair so you can wind up with things like gray, green, purplish hair where it did not set well. What you want to use is Acid dye. I found the powdered versions very easy to use. There is one exception and that is dying blond. For blond one of the easiest and most natural ways to get blond mohair is to do a tea dye using tea bags. For some reason this does not fade and comes out very nice. I think it is because tea has tannic acid in it. The mohair takes it very well. The longer you steep the mohair in the tea dye the more yellow the blond will be.

I used to have instructions for all this somewhere but I will need to dig around to find them for you after church.

I couldn’t find my older files as I must have lost them with my last computer but here is the instructions from Mohair wig which is the place I used to get my acid dye powders.

Basic tea dying method is listed here.
