Soooooo the pin dots

Here’s the thread that made me start to wonder about the spots:

Oh that stinks!! Its like the vinyl is slightly abrasive? Maybe the clay wasnt sanded well enough or there was dust from sanding in the original that got transfered to the mold? Does the vinyl have a “tooth” there?

No idea what causes it

My Laila kit had the pin dots and I used some matte/satin varnish once I started noticing the paint pooling there. It did help to stop the pooling, so you should be good on that. Let me know how sealing the kit prior to painting works for you! Good luck :four_leaf_clover:

Yeah…I was so upset. Especially because she was a firsts kit. I’m wondering if we just lightly varnish the hands and feet only? Might that work? I think I know how this happens. When the medium is poured in the molds, they need to degass the vinyl. The pin dots are air bubbles that dry as they don’t degass or suck the air out of the molds long enough, so that renders the bubbles or pin dots on the tips of fingers and toes. Which is why you see larger bubbles come about through the surface after baking. The bubble is trying to come out of the vinyl. I was a mold maker for many yrs.

That makes sense! I just hate the thoughts of doing all the work and then having those spots appear.

I varnish before painting, anyway, so I’m hoping that takes care of the issue.

I have painted Laila twice and didn’t see spots. I’ve never painted Zuri.

Good info and great explanation. Thanks!

My Adalyn is kinda like that. Not sure how to explain it… I guess tiny bubbles… anyhow I tried to strip it off and it didnt even take it away. I was going to strip and prime it, repaint… but if it wont come off when stripping I am not going to take the time to do all that…

Anyhow I repainted the parts that did strip and just kept going… now I am rooting her… which may be dumb cause I cant charge as much but she is cute from a distance. lol

Aggravating.

Oh gosh, Jenni ~ that’s too bad. I’m finishing up Adalyn today and thankfully had no issues.
