Rit Dye Question

Hi there everyone! I have a question about the Rit-Dye and dying doe suede bodies. Ok so, I’m thinking about dying a caucasian doe suede body to look biracial. I’ve seen the Rit-Dye Dyemore line for Synthetic fabrics. I’m thinking about using the Sandstone color.
My questions are:
1.) Is it hard to dye a doe suede body?
2.) How has the dye held up?
3.) Have you had any leak out on the vinyl parts once the doll was assembled?
Thanks,
Julie

Just be careful because anything that is dyed usually bleeds.

Yeah I thought about that. I may just leave the body as it is.

I would just leave the body as is. If it is not a white body I think it is just fine.

@rebornmommysince2013 please show us when you do it! I am getting excited with all the new things that the BB reborn family is doing with their dolls. Everyone thinking outside the box and all. I’m so proud! :smile_cat:

I don’t have any experience with the newer Rit dyes for synthetic fabrics, nor have I dyed any doe suede bodies.

But in my experience with traditional Rit dye, the items get a vinegar rinse to help set the dye. Even still, tye dye colors will still bleed in the wash.
I would be concerned about the dye discoloring vinyl.

Cloth bodies not really matching the head and limbs is a common issue. I have reborns with bodies that are both significantly darker and lighter than their vinyl parts. I wonder if the artists expected different complexions than what they ended up with and just put them on bodies they had already purchased for the project in the beginning.

While I agree that as long as it isn’t bright white, it is probably acceptable. But the perfectionist side of me would love bodies that match better.

Have you thought about purchasing a cloth body from someone who makes them by hand who may have access to more skin tones? That may be your best bet.

Most non BB kits now days come with cloth bodies that are a pinkish tan color that works for either way. So as an artist it is cheaper to just use what it came with than to special order a darker one. I get it though, if you have a really dark skin tone a darker body is preferred.

Thanks everybody! I’ve decided I’m going to leave the body as is for now. I saw on the rit dye for synthetic fiber which I found out doe suede is that in order to dye the body, I would have to boil in a stainless steel pot and I’m just not sure I’m comfortable doing that. I don’t want to risk ruining it.

I tried dying a doe suede body for my Benny Prototype. It flat out would not take the dye. So I just bought him a dark body from Irresistibles.

Did you try the DyeMore?

I’ve used the synthetic dye before, but not for reborns. It worked well for the fabric I used it on, but I have no experience using it on doe suede. My guess is that it would probably work fine but there is no telling how many washes it would need afterwards to be sure it wouldn’t transfer to the vinyl.
