Pastels

Has anyone used these in place of pan pastels or coastal scents? They have a nice range of colors, but I’m mostly curious about long term durability/fading.

I am using them now for creasing and details. I made a doll for my daughter in law in November and used them for creasing, details and blushing. She told me no issues so far. I don’t sell babies and I don’t know if they fade longterm. Current doll WIP using them for creasing, veins, and details.

The picture of her face was taken outside.

Thanks @Evee. I’m very interested to try them! Do you notice any fading as you layer washes or do you do them before you seal?

I do notice a little fading adding washes just as I did with Coastal Scents. I have not sealed them after I apply them. I add my wages and mottling. If they fade, I just touch up. The Li Lopes I used the pastels. He is finished just waiting on hair. I sealed and varnished his limbs with no issues.
I use waterborne air dry paints and sealer. The waterborne sealer can be used in between layers per the instructions.

Maybe try a baby you are keeping or a test limb first.

I mixed red and the pale blush sticks. I ground them with an Emory board nail file to get this color. I find they mix very well.

I found with the coastal, they fade quite a bit after a lot of washes, so I had thought to use powders last and then seal. I use Liquitex, Golden, and UF, but mostly UF on the last couple of babies. I’d like to play on a baby with different techniques, and I’ve learned to seal certain areas, like brows, before I paint as it gives a small window of time to wipe off and start over without disturbing what’s underneath. I also like mixing my own shades so this would be perfect! I’m definitely going to try them!

No harm in trying. Just make sure your hands are clean with no powder on them before you pick up a head or limb but no worries. I found a sponge damp with water cleans off the powder. I apply them over top of washes mottling with no issues so far. I am allergic to Coastal Scents and had to find an alternative.
Applied pastel over mottling and flesh layers.

Yeah I actually did that with the coastals… Luckily it was my creasing color and it kinda blended with my mottling

Doing this going on 2 years now. I don’t know if I will get the hang of it. I keep trying. My family has been keeping me busy.

Your babies are beautiful! At the end of the day, as long as it makes you happy and you get enjoyment from it, that’s all that really matters

Gonna hurt my heart to let her go but I will they become like children to me. I used coastal scents on her. It is when I realized I was allergic to them.
