Does anybody use them? Do you use hard or soft?are they easier /harder to work with than coastal scents? I’d love more information about them as they greatly interest me.
I have them and use them some, mostly on my AA babies for shading. I do like to use the blue and yellow and purple on Caucasian babies. Sometimes I will mix up a crease color. They are very different from using Coastal Scents. They are very intense and grab quickly. So they do not have the same slide around for blending that Coastal Scents do. For this reason you have a bit of a learning curve when working with them. I like that they are pure pigments though.
Do you use hard or soft?
they only come in a round container that I am aware of. They are pancake like eyeshadow pots but way bigger. More the size of a face powder compact. You scrape some of the powder off to mix with colorless blender powder and/or other colors. I put the scrapings into a small container with a lid when I mix a color.
I only noticed when searching them they mentioned soft /hard?
I use them. They are very intense in color but I love high color. I use Ultra matte varnish to seal the color in if needed in the creases.
Panpastels are considered the softest Pastels sold. I guess other brands’ chalk pastels would be hard maybe?
I honestly have no clue Lol! When I searched them on Ebay, in the postings on some they said soft /hard… I didn’t know if there were two kinds?
Do you use ghs or air dry?
I use them, when I first got them I used them for veins, shading, etc… I find it easier though to use paint for those, so now I just use them for creases. I have only used coastal scents once, I personally didn’t like them. I found that I needed to use a lot and really grind it into the vinyl to get it to stain. Then when I sealed over them they pretty much disappeared, as soon as getting wet. I don’t have any of those issues with Pan Pastels though. I know a lot of people love coastal scents, they just didn’t work well for me personally. Pan Pastels brand is all soft pastels, powders. I use a couple of methods, sometimes I use colorless blender, sometimes I don’t. When I don’t I just brush a small nail brush against the pallet and paint the crease with it, if it’s too sharp looking I will just use a wet brush and blend it out a bit. I find them to be pretty easy, but like everything once you get the hang of it. I love that if I mess up I can just get it right off with thinner.
I really didn’t like the costal scents either… I suppose if I played with them more, I might? I use air dry so thinner wouldn’t be an option and no clue what might remove a mistake? It’s definitely something to think about.
I use primarily GHSP, but I do have air dry paints (Golden & Ultimate Fusion) and have painted several babies with them, using PanPastels. Although I did have mineral spirits available, you can also just remove them with a small amount of rubbing alcohol. Even soap and water works if you do it right away. I only know that because I accidently got some on my hands once, picked up a limb and left a big red wine pastel stain. I used dish soap right away and it came off no problem. Had I left it overnight or something I don’t know or would have come off so easily.
I like coastal scents better. Pan Pastels also come with a cancer warning. I use air dry to avoid the heat set fumes so that was a turn off for me. I just bought the new powders Sue Ellen recommended and they are better than coastal scents. I would say closer to the pan pastels coverage/staining.
Are they the Kryolan? I considered trying these also.
Air Dry - Liquitex
I made a separate post of what I’ve bought to replace the coastal scents and pan pastels.
Really? Do you know if it’s all of them or just certain ones (ie: metallics)? None of mine have anything at all like that. I thought they had to label packages with cancer warnings? If there is and they just don’t label it I wonder if it’s because there is something toxic or just dust, like cancer warnings for abrasion media if you inhale it.
Here’s what I found online. Mine had a sticker on the package and a paper that came with them. I remember thinking if there’s a cancer warning for California it’s probably a warning I should listen to here in Kansas.
I have found CA has cancer warnings on almost everything it seems! LOL!
Ahh, that explains it. I read it, it is for dust, so I’m assuming as long as you don’t scrape it all of the pallet and huff it, it’s safe Seriously though, that does explain why there are no warnings on any of my packages, I’m in Ohio and purchased it online, they probably only post the warnings if you purchase it from a store in California. I’m from CA and there were cancer warnings on literally everything, makeup, lotion, etc…
