Painted Hair or Rooted?

As an artist I prefer rooting the hair. I’ve tried painting 1 time and it is just not for me.

Thank you Karen. I have had to cut back on my coffee and I was never more than a two cup in the morning drinker… but I did not feel awake when I typed my reply.

I am soooooo not a morning person, ugh. :unamused: But your reply sounded fine to me @jennyk ~ and I don’t even drink coffee!

I enjoy rooting and love a head full of hair but that doesn’t mean I think any less of a baby if they are nicely painted.

Really well painted hair is great; I mean painted so well that you need to touch it to know for sure. That takes a real artist and not everybody is capable to paint hair to that high level. Rooting on the other hand, while being time consuming, can be mastered by just about anybody. All it takes is bit of practice and lots of patience, and time. Some skilled people might be able to do a good job in matter of hours, but patient beginner who takes their time, and slowly carefully inserts each hair can achieve fantastic result. Of-course, painted hair will look the same 10 years on, while I would not be so confident about mohair.

From a collectors perspective I love rooted hair and painted if done great. But I’d really prefer rooted… BUT from a reborners perspective I DESPISE rooting, and actually really really genuinely enjoy hair painting. I’ve said it a million times but it’s my favorite part of the whole process pairing hair and brows. Just not good at it lol

Is there anything else you can use besides the mohair, alpaca hair and human hair?

cannot think of anything else that would look like authentic baby hair… Other animal fibers are too coarse and woolly or frizzy.

I will say that well done rooted hair babies do sell better. Not all rooted hair is well done however. I have also seen well done painted hair babies sell very well and very high. So there is a market for both.

Some people can not root hair for either health reasons or lack of ability. I have had to almost give up rooting for health reasons. I paint hair on most babies now days. It has not deterred my sales any at all. It is true that I can charge more for a baby with rooted hair but at the end of the day, I have to do what I am able to do and still be able to continue doing what I love which is making reborn babies. I am trying very hard to get my hair painting up to the master level. I am far from there but I am determined to one day reach it.

I am also a collector and I have to say that my most favorite reborn baby I purchased from someone else has painted hair. I love the no muss no fuss factor.

My philosophy is to do what you enjoy and can do well. If you paint hair on a baby and someone buys it then sends it out to be rooted over well you still sold the baby you made and it is theirs to do whatever with now. Don’t take it personal. Just enjoy what you do is what I think.

She had a hat, @MichelleP20 ~ it’s the mohair anywhere in the area where I am. Weird, I know, but weird I am. :unamused: Like, I can’t be in a place with cats because of the dander. I love cats. :pensive: Thank you for thinking of me, though! Marissa Rose is worth a Benadryl every now and then. I truly love that baby!

@ludmila if you are doing an AA baby then the woolly or frizzy would be perfect, any suggestions?

Black dyed wool could do for AA baby. But there are some lovely very curly mohair batches available. I haven’t done AA baby lately, but I am sure you find all sorts of mohair or wool on ETSY

Thank you westernstarr, that makes sense. :grinning:

Thank you ALL for But I prefer rooted and I root the babies I make. I was just wondering if rooting was fading out and painting was in. Rooted makes the baby look a feel more real. But I am seeing a lot of painted hair. Was confused. To each their own. I have seen Several painting and rooting combinations on the same head I really liked tho.

ooooh, I might try that. I have human hair, but it doesn’t seem right for my current baby.

Ha ha…well I recently bought some 24" human hair extensions…not for me…but for a toddler doll, and was pleasantly surprised when they arrived. They are well packed and presented and squeaky clean, and for me, no different than receiving animal hair. Best bit…it was a 1/2 price sale on a few colors only. Win win!

I prefer rooted. You have to have better mohair though no ruby red.
