I have had lots of people in and out, so I’ve been happily chatting about my new hobby, even bringing Megan down to show people… but they are freaked out by her. One person said she was “creepy.” A couple of others held her then quickly gave her back saying that it was weird that she looked so real… On a brighter note, one lady supervises a hospital and was interested in checking into ordering some for her dementia patients… I wasn’t planning on selling them, but okay, maybe a few to offset my expenses won’t hurt.
I don’t get it. Instead of a flat canvas, we work on 3D vinyl. What is so weird or “creepy” about this? How do you respond to this?
P.s. Glad to be back. Missed all of the dolly chit chat…
You know what, @Kate, in some weird way it did, but I don’t understand why. I’m not overly sensitive, but was really taken aback by these responses… It’s like here I am happy for once, proud of what I’ve learned so far, but what is making me so happy is creepy and weird???
It’s not because the dolls are creepy. There is just a factor that effects some people. When something gets too close to reality it effects people negatively. Consider it a compliment. Your dolls look real!
I think some people’s brains are not able to interpret it as what it is: 3D artwork that is intended to look as realistic as possible. Other people automatically see a beautiful replica of an infant when they see them, and there’s nothing negative about it to them. To me, babies are beautiful and so seeing a realistic reborn or making one as realistic as I can is a beautiful thing. I think people get weirded out that it’s not alive and it’s a doll, and so they think for some reason it shouldn’t look so real. One of my aunts used to say that my dolls freaked her out, but more recently she’s come around to actually finding them interesting, and often likes my work now. Some people may see them in a more positive light once they’ve been “broken in” to the concept.
Yes, creepy is a word we hear sometimes. Just try not to let it bother you. Dolls have the ability to cause all sorts of reactions in people. Why else are horror movies with doll characters so popular? They speak to something deep in us and some people have had bad experiences, but fortunately most have had good experiences.
