Mohair?

Help! I ordered mohair from an etsy seller… I received it today… I love the color and how soft it is, but it is very curly (I thought it would be wavy, but not this curly)and it is very fragrant!!! Will washing it ruin it? Is there a safe way to relax the curl? Help!!

I don’t see why it couldn’t be straightened with an iron on low or set on large rollers. Can’t it be treated like any other hair?

I’ve seen kinky coiled human hair straightened with a hair straightener or clothes iron at the root ends for easier rooting.

And some people set it with rollers after rooting to style. :woman_shrugging:t2:

Hopefully some experienced artists who use it all the time will chime in with how they manage mohair that’s curlier that expected. :slightly_smiling_face:

Yes you can wash it and straighten it! Low heat! It might get just as curly again when wetting the hair when you are done rooting but it may stay more wavy. Try wetting it and letting it sit between some towels when it’s more straight if you don’t want to heat it

Thank you!! What do you think about me washing it? Whatever they used is SO fragrant! I won’t be able to do anything with it if I can’t reduce the smell :grimacing:

Oh… Whoops… You DID say I could wash it…lol

Thank you!! I will work on it then!!

VEE … pm’d

Thank you!! I will do that tomorrow!!

I have had good luck straightening curly mohair with a straightening iron. I don’t let it get too hot or expose it very long, just a couple of passes over the plates. It is much easier to root that way, and, yes, it will curl back as it was originally when water is sprayed on it.

I’m always torn with considering it hair/fiber/fur.

Obviously it acts like a wool fiber and responds to felting methods.
