Lighting really is everything

Hello, hope you are doing great.

Just wanted to share some thoughts because never before like now have I realized that lighting can completely distort dolls’ skin tones. This is Delilah. The most flawed baby in my collection, the one whose coloring is the richest.

Pictures 4-5-6 are taken in daylight but it was 7pm, so almost sunset time. This is the time slot where I can see her the most since I work 8 am-5pm everyday. Her purple tones are enhanced and it made me question her quality and “lifelike-hood” (is that a word? Lmao)

Pics 1-2-3 were snapped at 8 am today. It was a bit cloudy but you can tell the difference. Her purples are a bit more under control and overall she looks better in my opinion and closer to how I see her in real life.

Granted she is far from perfect and she’s got flaws (nothing that is worth messing and stripping tbh), but yeah I was considering selling her for a very low price (supply cost only). All that because I was looking at her in poor quality lighting.

Sorry for the rant. Thought it was interesting to share.

Definitely interesting what difference it makes!

Now I’ve seen dolls being sold that were so badly lit they looked green, but I never realized even good lighting can shift color so much!

I think it’s also because she’s really high contrast in her colors. Which is why I was debating whether selling her.. coloring changes so much depending on the time of the day. So I have no idea about pricing. But she definitely looks better in the morning.

I think she looks good in both lighting situations. If listing, I would include both with a comment.

Lighting changes with the time of day, season of the year, weather..so many things. I have invested in some inexpensive lighting with the umbrellas. Even then occasionally the coloring looks off. Sometimes changing the surrounding props will help. Certain background colors will affect the way the camera picks up color.Try changing the color props. Also I occasionally put a thin piece of fabric of different colors over my umbrella lights to get a better outcome. Photography is tricky especially is you go by natural daylight alone.

I have one of these. I have no clue where it is since we moved. I need to do a search!!

I have several layers of tissue paper wrapped around my day lamp…..it is still too harsh

Not quite the same :joy::joy::joy:

There are different watt light bulbs that you can purchase or just use regular light bulbs at different strenghs. Also adjusting the umbrella closer or farther to the the bulb changes the light
