Kid Mohair

Hi ladies, have any of you used kid mohair?? I have some that I love but it is really fine. It is Angela Sprott and it’s beautiful, but fine. Is it hard to root?? Does it break easy?? and which needles do you use?? I use a 43g single barb but I wondered if I should use one with more barbs since the hair is so fine, any one know? Help Please.

I used kid mohair on my everleigh. It feels like forever if you single strand because the strands are thinner. My hair was from Sugargliders which I haven’t had any issues so I can’t compare with what your using. I used 42 single barb and sometimes 46.

That’s what I was afraid of!! I don’t want it to take forever since I’m a slow rooter anyway!!

Yup, I was kicking myself in the butt and then did the back half as yearling. It’s a big difference.

Ive done kid rooting with 42 gauge three barb. It wasn’t too bad. Lost a good bit of hair though, more than with yearling.

I have used Angela’s fine adult mohair and omg it rooted beautifully with almost zero waste!! With that mohair i used a 40g spiral needle. I was rooting 10 month old Kenzie so i didnt even attempt to micro root but the hair was beautiful and never frizzed up.

I have used Slumberland kid and it was harder to root than the yearling, but looked beautiful. I used a German 43 forked needle, but found that you really have to very carefully pull one or two hairs from your lock. It was easier to end up with too many hairs and have to pull some out- but that could be my vision lol.

I would stick with the needle you’ve got; any more barbs and you’ll end up with big plugs. That being said, kid is so fine that sometimes with lighter colored hair you won’t even see the plugs!

I didn’t know this until I started researching and processing mohair, so in case anyone’s interested:

Mohair comes raw from the farm in 5 different “grades”

  1. first clip kid
  2. second clip kid
  3. yearling
  4. fine adult
  5. adult

The very softest is of course the first clip kid, which is known as “next to skin soft” (think spinning and knitting into a scarf) It’s lovely and soft and super super fine, but the diameter of each hair is so small it can be challenging to root.

Most doll hair sellers only categorize into three grades: kid, yearling, and adult. So what is labeled “kid” from one seller might be a little thicker than that from another seller. Confusing, yeah??

That was completely off topic, but thought I’d share

@melcurll, where did you get your 40g spiral needle? Do you like them and do they root too many hairs? I have never tried them but I have heard of them and was wondering about them. Do they have a total of 6 barbs around the shaft of the needle??

I got my needles from heidifeathers.com she is in the uk but the needles pick up hair every time!! I need to get some more of Angela’s mohair to try and micro root with them. I wanna say the 40g spiral needle has 3 barbs…one on each side.

I’ve heard of spiral needles, and I know a few people here love them. I’m reading this and considering adding them to my store!

Lynn- do you have a test limb? Kid hair really is lovely once you get the hang of it. I made this little test patch for you last night so you can see. (Weird discarded grey hair! Haha) I purposefully rooted heavily by stabbing straight through a small bundle of hair with a 42g crown needle (3 barbs all at the tip) So you can see plugs a little bit, but it doesn’t look too bad. You’d have fewer plugs with your single barb needle, and I don’t think you’d need to isolate a teensy hair- but rather poke through a small bunch of hair. Just a thought. I understand the time commitment involved in rooting, so in the end you’ve gotta do what you’ll be happy with!

That hair looks lovely, I might have to try my kid after all. Only problem is it’s REALLY pale blonde so I figure I’ll go totally blind!! hahahaha

I know Weir Crafts has the spiral needles but they only seem to have 38g and that’s a pretty big shaft. Maybe I’ll try them just to see if I like them and then I could send to the UK for some.
