Everywhere says E6000 is a great glue for doll making but I’ve always been afraid of using it as it was said to be a health risk and dangerous. Looking online now I see a new one called E6000 Plus, is this a new hazard free version? Does it work as good?
IDK, but I’ve never used E6000 because of the risks associated with it and never had a problem with the glues I use. A lot of people do use E6000, though. The E6000 Plus is advertised as having no odor, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t toxic. If you do decide to use it, you should wear a respirator and work in a well ventilated area or outside. If you have children or pets I wouldn’t use it at all because they will more than likely not be wearing respirators and will breathe the fumes.
I am not so sure if I’m the tiny amount we use for glueing in a magnet is that toxic ?
I guess they are toxic in big amounts while during each day .
Some people use it for more than magnets. For myself, I’d rather not take the chance. We are exposed to so many toxins, I tend toward the side of caution and want to eliminate what I can. There are many other adhesive options available that are less toxic and work just as well.
I use it and I don’t see anything wrong, it’s only a very small amount, I don’t think it can case that much damage to be honest
Jean, I am with you. I try to steer clear of anything harmful or any carcinogens. I already have cancer and I don’t see any point in exposing myself to something that may or may not be toxic. So, I am wondering, what glue(s) do you use?
EDITED TO READ:
As there seems to be some question about the dangers and warnings of the E6000 glue, I found this on the MSDS sheet:
OSHA/HCS status : This material is considered hazardous by the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard
(29 CFR 1910.1200)
SKIN IRRITATION - Category 2
EYE IRRITATION - Category 2B
CARCINOGENICITY - Category 2
Warning
Hazard statements : H315 + H320 - Causes skin and eye irritation.
H351 - Suspected of causing cancer.
Here is the page if anyone is interested in reading the whole thing. I am not saying no one should use it, I am only sharing the information from the MSDS.
For the magnets inside the heads I use Aleene’s Turbo Tacky Glue (it dries a little faster), then, when it’s dry, I cover it with a strip of Dr. Scholl’s Moleskin. I glue eyes in this way, also, using 2 strips going opposite directions. It might be overkill, but I had a customer in Colombia email me that the baby’s eye had shifted. She ended up taking it to a doll hospital because it was cheaper than paying shipping twice. I want to make sure that doesn’t ever happen again. When I open the eyes on a closed eyed sculpt I use Super Glue to glue the eyes because there are no sockets. Then I cover them with strips of moleskin for added security. I use Super Glue for the magnet on the pacifier and cover that with moleskin as well. To glue hair and eyelashes I use Aleene’s OK To Wash It because it’s easy to apply, waterproof, flexible and dries clear. Some people use Mod Podge for hair.
thank you so much!
You’re welcome.
OH good grief! I have been using E6000 for many years now as I started this art in 2004. I have not had any health issues using it. Just use common sense and don’t go huffing it up your nose, using near flames/fire or using it in a small non-ventilated place. It does not have a nice smell but it goes away as it dries.
