I didn't know we had

Kate Charles told me the paint thinner, I was using, Mona Lisa is not good for doing AA babies. She gave me the name of 2 thinners. Told me to try one of them. She said check at Michael’s or hobby lobby. I googled hobby lobby and discovered we do have them in ohio. I was excited. I had my husband take me this morning. I got one of the thinners she recommended. She said I will see a big difference. Unfortunately, I have to wait 2 weeks to try it. I’m at the airport as I type this. Can’t wait to get back home n try this thinner by Bob Ross.

Ive used bob ross when i first started out. Its expensive but works nicely. I stopped using mona lisa because of the chalkyness it causes on AA babies. Now I use Gamsol. It works great!

Yes it is, but so is the Gamsol. When I get back home I’m gonna buy some Gamsol too. That was the other thinner she recommended.

It does cause chalkiness. I thought it was normal. I’m glad I know now. I have a whole unopened bottle. Gonna take it back to Michaels.

If I am going for a darker shade I will also add a few drops of refined linseed oil.

I have always used Mona Lisa & no problems with it on my AA babies. The key to me is very thin layers and I only 6-10 layers even on my darkest reborns, 12 at most. I use to use linseed but I did away with it because I do large batches of paint just putting a lid & reusing it later. Linseed clumps the paint up over the time and it waste a lot of paint.

A lot use Gamsol. You get chalkiness when using Mona Lisa or Linseed Oil? If you are getting chalkiness with the thinner, your paint may be too thick.

It wasn’t to thick. It is always runny like milk. I was doing thin layers as well. I did 4 layers on an. AA doll and wasn’t at the color it should have beenbe. I was told my mixture was a lil too watery.

I would get chalkyness from mona lisa. If i added linseed oil it would help to prevent it from getting chalky. My paint is always thin but i do paint many layers of flesh tones. After switching to gamsol I dont have an issue with chalky.

Strange, there should not be so much difference between different brands of thinners. I only get chalkiness from white, which is in flesh and some other pale premixed colours, and as I never use any of them on my AA, I have never had any issues with chalkiness on darker skin babies.

Me either. The only chalkiness I ever had was with matte varnish so I started mixing satin and matte together.

I’ve noticed sometimes too if my paint is too diluted or too much slo-dri I’ll get a chalky residue…
