How many of you incorporate new techniques?

How often do you try something new? Do you incorporate new techniques into your current work or practice on test babies? Do you have a test baby? Head or limbs? Do you use the same ones over and over?

I’m thinking I need to strip and shave my Londyn or buy a new one to try new things.

I’m stuck in a rut afraid to ruin my ‘good’ kits lol

I try something new with every baby I make. It is scary to make a mistake and ruin something, but the mistakes help me learn and become a better artist. I also paint the flanges because it gives me areas I can practice on without ruining the baby. The painted flanges are also great for checking for cured paint.

When I try something new it’s almost always in the spur of the moment and on a good kit. It usually looks awful but, oh well, I just gotta roll with it at that point…

I definitely need to remember to do that!

I’m trying something new quite often. I normally just incorporate it into my painting unless it’s a huge change then the entire baby might be a new technique. I’ve only ever bought two test limbs and it was back in 2012 when I was starting with Genesis. I practiced on my limb and then painted my baby, everything since then has been practiced right on the baby I am making. I wasn’t too concerned about ruining it if I used a regular BB kit if what I was trying didn’t work out so I just went for it.

Rotfl!!! Oh no!!! That’s what I’m trying to avoid! I painted my sleeping and awake jennies at the same time to make twins and for some reasons they didn’t match and one is really dark. I don’t like either of them and it was my favorite kit I couldn’t wait to paint . I did them for the paint your favorite kit challenge.

Sorry about your Jennies! That stinks. Maybe if you keep tinkering you can get at least one of them where you want her? I think it is safe to say I have completely “ruined” each doll I ever painted at least once! Huxley is downstairs fuming at me right now because I somehow managed to turn her into a blueberry this afternoon and I’m not entirely convinced the Charlotte that I’m rooting shouldn’t be an alternative because I just can’t get past the “dead baby” vibe with her. Too much white in the wash probably. I just have to remind myself that they all go through that awkward stage no matter how I decide to paint them.

I try something new on most babies. Never something big, but always something. I don’t worry too much about ruining to kits, but that will probably change when I do ruin one

I buy uglies. I actually love funny looking babies. I get older sculpts when they are on sale and use them to try new things on. If they are not ready for prime time I give them away/donate them.

I am always playing and learning. I have a baby that was gifted to me. He limbs are mismatched, she is sharpie stained, I am going to just have a good time playing with color, mixing mediums, I may use a wig for the first time. It’s a good way to switch gears, get out of a rut and outside my comfort zone.

If you have odd parts laying around do a Frankenstein baby…

These sweet little canvas babies have endless possibilities.

I recently primed a kit for the first time, used a UV varnish, and tried milia on Madison. I practiced that on a test leg first.

I fly by the seat of my pants with every baby I paint, so yeah I guess I try new techniques every time. Poor babies. :joy:

Every single doll I make, I use new techniques. But then, I’m easily bored, and couldn’t possibly keep doing the same thing, over and over.

Every baby is a new challenge for me, I like to try and add on new techniques but mostly I am trying diffrent tones, colors and things like that.I think the more comfortable you get, the more daring you get also to try new things.

I often try new stuff, either because I read about them here or because I just made something up. 9/10 times it doesn’t work for me, but oh well. At least I’m having fun.
I really couldn’t paint each baby the same way, that would be far too boring for me.

I walk into each baby with no plan. Whatever happens happens. So often times I’m doing things I’ve never done, trying to see how it goes.
I do have some tried and true methods I do with each baby just cuz I’ve found it works for me lol
But other then that? :joy::joy::joy:
Starting Monday I’ll be adding powders to the list lol.
I also do have a test kit and test head and test torso to practice on lol

I try really hard to follow some sort of “process” but I wind up flying by the seat of my pants on every baby. I’m always trying something “else”, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t!! LOL

I dont think I’ve ever done a baby the same as any other. I just kinda wrong it with each baby and (knock on wood) so far, I’ve had good results.
