I baked at 275 for 9 minutes as usual. It’s probably been baked about 5-6 times. This happened on the last back. How can I fix this? Also the top of the head sunk in a little. I’m assuming I can just stuff it back to it’s shape. It’s not for sale. I was making it for free for my bestie granddaughters birthday.
First of all that’s too hot. Baking should be at 265 for 8 minutes. Baking longer or hotter can result in melted vinyl or vinyl that becomes shiny. I’m sorry this happened, maybe you can stuff it and reheat it to try to get the shape back. Make sure to use an oven thermometer in your oven and don’t bake quite so hot. Hope this helps. Oh and BTW, you can put your parts into a cold oven, set the temp, turn it on and it only needs to have reached the 265 temp for a couple of minutes to set the paint. 8 minutes should be adequate. Hope this helps.
edit to add: you sound like you are not new to reborning so I hope I haven’t offended you, not my attention. Good Luck on your repair.
This happened to me when I baked my Sunny kit, her head sunk inwards. My dad alerted me and while the vinyl was still hot, I filled the head with cold water immediately. Once rooted, it won’t be noticeable.
If this happens ever again, fill the limbs or head with cold water to regain some sort of shape (while it is still hot/immediately).
Below, I attached a photo of her dented head. You can see the dent, it was way worst before adding cold water to salvage it.
Oh no! It looks like fondant .
It looks shiny too like the integrity of the vinyl has changed. If that is true I don’t thing there is any going back. Is it stuck together or just collapsed? You can try boiling it in water to see if it will pop back into its original shape and then stick it in the freezer to set it. I’ve had legs collapse and heads (just a little) and the heads now have weird bumps and the legs just stay collapsed until I fill them. But yeah lower your oven temp and keep a close watch on it.
What kind of oven do you have? Do you use an extender ring?
If you’ve been running that temp for awhile with no problems this could be a sign your oven is on its way out.
Wow you packed that oven full!
Oh no! I don’t bake all of that at once ahahaha. That’s currently her home until I finish her. I’m missing material and she’s been sitting patiently waiting since 2017
Phew!
Ahahah that gave me a good laugh though
Place it in hot water . It will fix itself a bit . Then stuff with pollyfiber.
Be ware, before I got me Nuwave, my off brand oven started intermittently doing this exact thing before it finally konked out.
YES…all of mine that have went bad have done that before finally dying!!
Thanks for explaining. I was about to ask how you managed to bake with the parts touching each other and the sides. My blood pressure went up just looking at that pic. My parts get wonky if they barely touch.
Yeah I could only imagine! But no, she’s just living there. Her parts weren’t touching but I had my brother take the picture, so he moved my strategic placement. Nonetheless, the paint hasn’t chipped or anything. But no no! They’re baked separately and dang
Edited: errors (got too eager to hit send ;))
Have you shared pics of her put together yet? I can’t wait to see the finished baby.
No I haven’t, I don’t know when I’ll be finishing her up sadly. But I do want to!
Mine rosewill went bad all at once but I did have some super shiny parts…so it may have been malfunctioning before that
I started out doing 265 when I first started reborning. Then I eventually switched to 275. I’ve been heating at 275 for over a year n no problems. I know a lot of artist heat at 265. I actually think it has something to do with the biracial vinyl. This is the second biracial Shyann kit this has happened to. This one not nearly as bad. No, I’m not offended at all. But thank you for your input.
Sorry for the misfortune!. I am new working on my first reborn baby. I wanted to say that I am following “ Customdollbaby.com” series on reborning and Kim, who is a well renown reborn artist, cures the paint at 255 degrees F for 8 minutes. She said “ she rather add more time than increasing temperature”. I am doing the same and my baby is going ok. I have cure the paint 10 to 12 times already. I use a thermometer from bb and also check to make sure the paint is set.
How do you check to see if the paint is set?
I let the kit cools down after curing 30 minutes or so, then, use a damp cotton swab and rub the paint to check if I can see paint on the cotton swab.
