I need a bit of help please…I have never seen an air dry up close and personal…till today. I think this is probably one of the older brands but I really don’t know and I don’t know if that was ever sealed as I don’t know what it is supposed to look like The doll is probably less than a year old I would guess but I don’t know for sure…will not be posting pictures other than this foot so that you can see what is happening with it…I don’t think I can fix it with GHS unless I strip them back…I’m not one to bother with doing that if there is any effort involved in stripping them so need to know if they are easy to strip or should I just get a new kit and start from scratch…I can wet my finger in dish washing liquid and water and it scraps easy enough with my nails so just wondering if there is something that will just sort of ‘wipe’ the paint off? There is some sort of clear shiny sealer on the toe and finger nails but I can scrape that off with my finger nails any advice would be appreciated… When she sent me pics asking if I could fix, I did not realize it was air dry paint or I would have declined…Thanks in advance…
dang scarey ! No clue I’m still in between, so no experience with air dry sorry, I’m sure someone will know
I had the devil’s own job trying to strip air dry paint off my Fay Zweers kit. I tried all sorts of things. Do you have any 99% rubbing alcohol at all? I think that might shift it xx
I use Winsor & Newton brush cleaner and restorer to strip my air dry paints. It sounds like air dry clear varnish is on the nails and the W&N will clean that off also.
I tried the alcohol and though it is turning the cotton balls brown and some is coming off, it will be more work than I want to do…hahahahaha!
I will see if we have that here in Oz and if it is not more cost than a new kit I may give that a try…It’s a cutie kit so would just toss this one and buy another but doesn’t seem to be anyone in Oz with one at the moment so would have to order from BB and I don’t really want to have to order other stuff I don’t need just to get the kit but I may have to yet…wahhhhhh
Starr, I think I remember reading on some other forum about some type of cleaner that was a “cream” type. I think they said it was an Ajax crèam cleaner or something like that. Have you ever heard of such a thing?? I’m not saying that was the name but I will try to find it. They were saying it worked great and left the vinyl feeling very soft and smooth.
I would suggest sending a message to Nikki Holland and ask what she would use to strip air dry paints. I order my Real Effect air dry paints from her and she is such a sweet person and she is in Oz. Here is the link to her site: Still Moments Nursery – The Reborn Doll Specialist
Thanks @Sony72 adn @lynn…we do have that here…I may have some…will have to go scouting through my cleaners…if not… back to town for me tomorrow…ugghhhhh…(just went today - 25 miles in for me so hate to go again so soon.) Thank you…I feel some hope…Fortunately she was rooted with synthetic hair and was not glued well so pulling out easily and not leaving too many holes so if I can get this paint off easy enough…I’m in business…
@Sony72 - can you paint over air dries with GHS…I know you have or still do use both…or someone on here knows alot about the Air dry paints…If I had to guess, I would say these most likely are NOT FX cause they scrape off too easy…
Thanks Janet but Hmmmmm well, I did not have a very good experience with her in the not so distant past…I ordered 12 sets of eyes from her, paid her via Paypal - she is not that far from me actually, waited 3 weeks, emailed and asked about my order, she told me she was processing it as we spoke…I waited 2 more weeks, emailed again…she tells me she has the order but did not have 2 - 3 of the colours I ordered even though they were still showing available on her website & asked if I wanted a partial refund or another colour.I chose another colour…waited another week and emailed again…she still had not posted them so I told her to just refund me and I’d go elsewhere…it was my first and last experience with her…I have another friend who ordered some sort of cleaner from her and waited 5 weeks and numerous emails as well…she finally got her order but will never order from her again either…Soooooo…I really do hate it cause she had some good prices on her eyeco eyes and I do always buy in bulk so would have been a good place to buy supplies and would have given her a regular customer cause I like to support the local businesses when I can but just don’t want to go through all that again…It put me in a bit of a not so nice position with a couple of customers because I kept promising them I would have their dolls that week and the next week and the next week so it made me look bad because I was waiting on those eyes…
Thanks Sonja…I think I will give it as good a clean as I can and then try and paint over it…the worse that can happen is that I have to buy a new kit and start over and if that happens, I’ll just donate this one to an aged care facility…(might just do that anyway…lol) Will let you know how I go…Thanks again for your help…
Wow! I am surprised that you had a bad experience with Nikki. I have never had a problem ordering from her and I usually get my orders here in the US within 2 weeks. But if I had an experience like you had I wouldn’t bother either.
I would not suggest to paint over with GHSP. From what I can see from the photo with the paint rubbing off like that is it may have not been cured properly or could have been the cheap craft paint. I would totally strip it.
Yes Starr I had a similar experience with Nikki Holland …ordered an available doll kit from her which turned out to be unavailable …and her… 'I’m waiting for my order of this kit to come" left me wondering why it was listed as available in the first place. I got tired of waiting and asked for an exchange kit to the same value that I had already fully paid for. (And not a cheap one at that.) And I waited for a couple of months or more. I shop elsewhere now.
And sorry I’m no help with air dried paints.
Do you have any idea what happened to that doll?
I don’t know, Helen…The lady is a collector and takes quite good care of her dolls but she does buy them really nice expense outfits and change them on and off .When she sent photos I just assumed it was GHS…and she would not have known the difference anyway…The painting is not top standard…I’ll just say it that way…I have seen worse but I’ve also seen much better…lol I have to say that I liked the look of the finish - not shiny so may have been sealed with something??? …it is quite natural and more translucent than I expected…I sort of thought it would be sort of ‘painted’ looking with the air dries but was pleasantly surprised. The artist had problems with shading and blending especially creases and I might not have pick up that it was air dry had I not seen the feet and hands where the paint had rubbed off in spots…so me being me started looking closer and realized it was not GHS but air dry…I wet my finger and scrubbed across the brows and the paint came away and when I got up close and personal I could see the difference then of course as there definitely is a difference in the finish once you are looking for it…If what everyone says about FX is true, then I would venture a guess these were NOT FX paints used here because whatever air dry was used on her, they definitely do not have the staying power or longevity of GHS…
The paint washed off with a little water? That should not happen. The paint looks so dirty/smudgy in the picture. I don’t understand what happened here. Of course, with my new airdry experiments, this kind of freaks me out.
Don’t freak out…Your baby is beautiful…The paint came off with water dish detergent and a bit of rubbing back and forth with a wash cloth…Probably one of those other air dries some of the ladies said they switched from and we have heard nothing but great reports from the ladies here about FX so I doubt you have anything to worry about…I don’t know much about them but just going off the Air Dry artist on here, I would bet the ones used were not FX on this one…She is a bit ‘muddy’ looking…lol I think she was meant to be a lighter AA skin tone…I don’t wish to show the face cause I would never do that intentionally to defame any artist but will just say she is moderate quality. the lady that owns her would have paid too much for her as she only buys them in the higher price range so I feel really sorry for her…but anyway…please don’t worry…there is no comparison between your little Gemma and this one…
100 % Acetone? No alcohol unless you aren’t using air dry. Maybe she didn’t use a primer.
