I am so bummed. I sold a Christmas baby to the sweetest lady in Kentucky and she just sent me a photo of the dolls head, the varnish is all crackled on one side. Not the “didn’t bake that varnish long enough” kind of cracking. I have been using air dry since the Genesis shortage so I just paint it and let it cure. I did five or six babies at the same time, they all got the same varnish but just this baby cracked and only in that one spot (side of her head).
I am going to have to refund her. It looks awful. I am so sad, she really needs that baby. I told her to ship it back and I would try to repair it but I am not sure I can. This is the strangest thing.
Thank goodness I left that money in my PayPal.
This varnish business is giving me a pain in the arse parts.
Oh man, that’s horrible. What kind of varnish have you been using?
If it makes you feel any better I have messed up several babies just because of this varnish shortage. All I know is air dry, it’s just me mixing stuff in an attempt to stretch what I have and not doing it right, I guess.
This whole situation sucks. I’ll be glad when we can all get what products we all like to use, and for Genesis users hope that everything you get will cure.
I’m so sorry. That is disheartening for you, and her. That’s so good that the money was there for an easy refund.
What varnish do you use? I use only air dry paints and haven’t had my varnish crack before but, l worry about formula changes with all this covid business, and shortages etc. My varnish seems to be the same as before, but it makes me a little nervous.
So sorry to hear about this Gina. Isn’t there something about pressure changes in planes as packages are being shipped? Is there a chance that part of her face caved in with the pressure change and that damaged the varnish? The only thing I could think of that would cause that sort of problem. Doesn’t really change anything but I’m just wondering if that could ever cause subsequent crackling of varnish. It’s a real bummer when someone is happy with one of our babies and something goes sideways.
I’m loving my Pickles and she’s fine. I really like how snuggly she is with the 1/4 limbs. Keep on creating, can’t wait to see what you’re working on now!
I did, it was actually a combo of soft touch and two other air dry varnishes, I was playing mad scientist. the other four babies are fine, just this one. Grrrr…
I think it may have been the varnish reacting to the GHSP under it? Just a weird reaction on this one doll. I am glad you are happy with your circus baby.
I am so sorry that happened. I am down to about three dolls worth of Genesis Matte Varnish and then I will have to use something else. I have a few customers that only like Genesis and they want Lauras. I am hoping that the company really does resume production next month, but I live not far from the production site and they used to always advertise for workers and that has not happened yet, so I am worried…
Do you mix anything with the Americana Soft Touch Varnish? I saw a YouTube where they mixed other ingredients and on a review they said they mixed 1/4 teaspoon of corn starch and some distilled water.
20 drops distilled water
1/4 tsp cornstarch (teaspoon)
1 level plastic spoon of soft touch varnish
Dissolve cornstarch in water. Add soft touch varnish and mix well.
Apply with a cosmetic sponge. Let it dry. Reapply the second layer after the 1st layer cured (I wait 24 h between layers).
I have a couple half jars and I scored two of the soft touch a month ago. I have been mixing them together. I do have some small jars of genesis matte varnish that I mixed into a bigger container but I am holding in back for hair, eyebrows, and priming. I really hope Genesis gets back up in running this year.
