I go through the same especially if I do multiple layers. I tried changing my thinner and using Lindseed. The only time it works well is in super thin layers, baking between, a lot of pouncing, and making sure you don’t go over dry with wet.
A lot of artist go thick, I have never been successful.
I tried that thick layering stuff too! Epic failure. Too much pouncing. Too much work. I’d rather do thin layers.
I hear ya, it also feels like I have more control. I am painting big Joe and my goodness trying to get a wash on that head is torture, it starts to dry before I get half way around and he takes two trips to the oven.
Try adding a drop or two of linseed oil. This really helps for a smooth application.
