How big is your baby sculpture?
@honojane Hey Helen I would say large newborn maybe. I just tried measuring across from forehead to chin and a little over 5 inches long. All the way around the head was 15 inches.
Much better than anything I could ever do, @Becca! I tried to sculpt just a foot one day…after 6 hours or so, I ended up with a foot that looked like it might be big enough for a Ken doll.
Nice! What did you use for an armature under the clay? I’ve used tin foil before, wondering if that’s the best thing…?
@kareninflorida Thank you, Karen!! You should keep trying, I bet you would be able to work some magic! Don’t feel bad, I’ve had quite a few Sasquatch looking feet,
@Rainbowbabies Thanks, Kirsten! Tinfoil for the base of the head, nothing for the ears. I know some like styrofoam balls for the head, but it shrinks. As far as I know tinfoil is the best, and I know that it helps it cure faster.
Styrofoam is very toxic, don’t use it. It is my understanding that you can use the type of Styrofoam that is made in Europe but NOT the type here. When heated it melts, shrinks and emits very toxic fumes. As freaky as most doll ladies are of even using the Genesis paint (because of baking the vinyl) I wouldn’t suggest you use Styrofoam. You can purchase head shape armatures if you are having a struggle getting your sculpt even. Becca, are you using the mirror trick? As you are sculpting, turn your head away from you and look at it in a mirror and you will see anything that is uneven. It works wonderful. Keep up the good work!!
@lynn
Nice to see you, Lynn! I had no idea it was toxic, so glad I don’t use it then!! I never would have guessed. I haven’t tried the mirror trick, thank you for sharing that. I will definitely try it out!!
Glad I could be of help and not sounding like I was lecturing you!!
