So I’ve been doing a bit of research and have been looking into getting a new camera for taking dolly photos. I read that the Canon G7X is really good but I don’t have that kind of money right now.
I’ve been using my phone for the past 3 or so years. My mom has said to me so many times that my photos don’t do my dollies justice–she’s my mom, of course she’s supposed to say that. But I’ve also had customers say the same thing.
Anyways, I want to make a switch, but I don’t have $500 on hand right now so it probably won’t be immediately, more like eventually. I’m always in awe of the beautiful photos of @Jacky’s babies and of HBN Art Dolls babies–I know they use backdrops and other props, but they’re so gorgeous!!
Thought I would reach out to you all and see what you’re using for your photos. Please comment the name of the camera as well as a photo you have taken using the camera.
Great post! I have the same problem. I use my phone for pictures, people say my dolls look so much better in real life vs. photos. So I am following…
Following. I also use my phone… my dolls look better in person.
I have the Cannon G7X and love it. I also have the Nikon D5600. I have the Galaxy s7 phone and it takes great pictures. I’m a new reborn artist and most of the pix that I have taken of my WIP has been with my phone and they came out great.
I use a canon eos rebel t6, which is an expensive camera. Probably overkill for just dolls, but I’m a photographer as well so I use it for dolls since I have it. Honestly though, you can get good pictures with just about any camera. It comes down to experience and practice mostly. You can still take awful pics with a nice camera lol This first picture was taken by my old camera, an olympus model from 2006.
And this next one with the canon
So really get a camera you can afford and PRACTICE! Go out and just play around, play with settings and lenses and things until you get what you’re looking for! If I can find them, I’ll get some pictures of when I started photography 3 years ago, and now. The only real difference is practice!
Good luck!
This was taken with my phone.
I have a cannon T1 rebel that I got years ago and it still takes amazing pics. Like @MilosMeadows said, it’s all about practice and lighting mostly.
I use a Canon EOS 40 D. You can get them used on Ebay right now for around 200 US. There are many other used cameras for low prices too. Try to get one with the lens. Make sure you ask if the camera has been tested.
That is a real child, right? She is just too cute!
Yup! That’s my baby niece on her first birthday! She’s turning 2 in a few months and she’s a big sister now
iPhone. I think it’s 8mp. You most likely know all this but Before buying a new camera try practicing poses, angels, "framing up " the pic, not an actual frame, you know what I mean. Outdoor indirect lighting. You don’t really need high dollar props or backdrops or equipment. So many things in nature and even in home work great, and just blankets over pillows. Simplicity. Im no pro AT ALL. Photog is one of my reborn weaknesses. I did take classes years ago during the dark room ages. I get it in theory but putting it into practice is an art. There are cool apps that let you make your background blurry, w/o affecting your actual subject, and whatnot. Having said that, it’s normal to take 55 pics of the exact same thing to get a single one that you like. Now I’m going on a tangent but I’ve seen many pics of an asleep newborn sitting up, holding head up for the pic. That ain’t happening . I see babes that appear to be in motion, with legs and arms lifted up some. That seems to help with the realism aspect, instead of just lying flat on back. These were all Easter Sunday. It was overcast which seems to give me a yellow tone
I have a Nikon D3400. I bought it a couple of years ago. I also have a Cannon Rebel T3 so it depends on my lighting. I also bought a lighting kit for the days it is dark. But I can tell the difference from my Samsung camera which took great pictures when we were in Antwerp outside and my regular camera. But I say it all depends on the lighting.
Here is a picture taken with my Nikon.
