Awake vs Asleep

Which do you prefer and why?

I prefer sleeping newborns; they look more realistic to me than a baby who never blinks.

I prefer asleep. I think they are more realistic, posable,

The awake are cute in pictures but they are obviously a doll when they don’t move or blink, etc.

Sleeping is my preference.

I like sleeping for the peacefulness but my mum watches very closely when I paint a sleeping one “because if they’re done badly they look deceased”. For me it’s more of a matter of the actual mouth expression, for example Ellie Sue is open-eye but she has a fairly relaxed face/mouth, and so does my realborn Owen (Percy), Arianna, Angelica, Esmae and another kit I just ordered. I can take an open-eyed baby for a walk (not that I ever have yet) but sculpts with distinct expressions are less ‘versatile’, lol. I don’t think I’m making sense.

I’ll put it this way: Thomas Auer is asleep/ closed-eye, but he has such a distinct crying expression that he is obviously a doll because it never changes. On the other hand, Twin A has a very open mouth, but it’s relaxed like a baby who’s been sleeping for a while.

But if the mouth can be covered by a dummy, I don’t mind. My policy when selecting a kit is “Okay, you have an engaging face, you’re mine now.” Like Tink. Can’t wait for Tink.

I love the realism of a sleeping reborn in a realistic pose. But there’s something about some awake sculpts that, if you can get the eyes and brows just right, they just pull you in and grab your heart!

exactly!! Eyebrows are the make-or-break, I think. Eyebrows and hairline.

Awake. In my family the ones who like to interact with the babies like the eyes closed. The ones that like to do less interacting prefer Awake which is most of them. lol. They also like more hair (human hair) because most of them had a lot of hair as a baby. So I paint the way my family wants. I have not sold a baby, my family pays for the materials and I paint. My Hobby and I enjoy every second.

P.S. I still struggle with eyebrows, lol!

I bond better with the awake ones— I think they have more personality! There’s something nice about having a baby that looks at you back. But I agree that sleeping dolls are more realistic.

I used prefer the awake ones. Good eyes make them come alive. But the sleepers are so easy to root lashes, and so now I am making mostly sleepers.

Sleeping cause they look more realistic. Babies usually blink lol so its obvious.

I prefer awake babies. I like to hold, cuddle, and pose them… I have only made 2 sleeping babies and have found there was only 2 things I could do either them: hold them asleep, pose them asleep…

But I DO like the not having to buy 30 dollar eyes aspect…

My daughter (7) exclusively likes awake babies. I am currently working on summer rain who my daughter has called “ugly” because her eyes “don’t open”.

On the other hand I usually don’t like extreme expressions such as yawning or crying because, like sleeping, there is only one way to pose/interact… Also for me this is where they start to look “weird” and “dolly” or “frakishly frozen”

(I do like moderate expressions, like Saski or sunny tho)

I like both, but as a collector, I feel like I bond more with my awake babies. They have so much more personality for me when they are awake and I especially have a soft spot for smiling babies  This being said, my favorite reborn is still my Levi (who many of you met at the doll show).

I prefer sleeping babies. They’re easier to make and as others mentioned, they look more real.
For taking pictures I like awake ones, though.

Im very new at this, working on my 11th and 12th babies right now, Precious Gift and Kaelin, soon to be rooting Landon and Charles. I have bought, and painted, more closed eye than open but I think I like both for different reasons.

Perfect for Alternatives, lol!
