I have just spent several hours going through my many stashed away photos of babies real and reborn, and I wonder how many people take their inspiration from real life as opposed of copying reborn dolls?
One of the most obvious problems seem to be placement of the crown and the way the swirl goes; most dolls I looked at have it far too high on top of the head, and the swirl does not look right. Surely, that is something so simple to check on members of one’s family; I am lucky to have a granddaughter, but she was not much help in the swirl department; she has double swirl and there is no way I am going to attempt that! I have enough trouble with the single. But there is plenty of babies and children around, so when I go shopping I keep looking at swirles and crowns, as well as skin tone of the babies there. I think, at least as far as the position of the crown goes, I have it right; while the swirles vary quite a bit, the position of the crown does not.
Like a lot of us, I keep a file of all things BABY, some real and some reborn so if you see your own work here, excuse me but it must mean I love your work, obviously …here are some of my favorite swirls ~ and Pokes, you’ll notice I added yours!!! Hope you don’t mind!!!
My daughter had a swirl at the front of her head when she was a baby. I wish I still had photos of it but her father took them when he left. I’d love to recreate it on one of my reborns.

That is very interesting; did she also had another swirl? Because from may observation it is about in this area, take or give an inch, and not always perfectly centered That is what I was told by my art teacher, and also that was the point that we had to visualise to pull ourselves up in ballet.
The photos are not the best as you can’t see it in all its glory with her hair being longer but you can vaguely see it. I’ve also included one of the swirl at the back, again its not very clear.
'There was a little girl who had a little curl, right in the middle of her forehead. When she was good, she was very very good; and when she was bad, she was horrid!" - This is so true about my little Lola! I was always mesmerised by her front swirl when she was a baby. She’s 7 now and it makes styling her hair a real chore since it doesn’t grow straight down at the front.
Thank you, that’s kind of you to say. The boy in the last pic is my nephew but we are often asked if they are twins! Feel free to use Lola’s swirl for inspiration.
I figure it is time for the swirl about the time I get bored with rooting the back of the head and it is usually spot on! I go for about one inch behind the ears which is about the point where the curve of the head switches from vertical to horizontal. Not sure if it is perfect so guess I need to go look at more real babies…oh, I so hate stalking babies thru the stores
I also cut hair on the side and there is a little boy I do that has 2 swirls on the crown. He always looks like he has a Mohawk. Lol. It was cute when he was a baby but he is going on 11 now and he hates it. Makes for an interesting haircut. Lol.
