Air dry: primer as sealer?

So ever since I switched to air dry paints, I have found that they have a matte effect all by themselves. When I then apply matte sealer, they look almost chalky. This has been an experiment and I may just go back to heat-set (I still have so many from years ago). But right now I have my Elf-Fia nearly finished and she looks amazing the way she is. I just put primer (diluted) from Waterborne on her in order to then possibly apply more blue wash (not sure about that) and…right how her amount of matte is literallly perfect. I don’t want to mess with it if I don’t have to. Anyone know about this?

Hello

I never used a primer as a sealer but I did use a sealer as a primer.

I also find that varnish makes air dry look all funny and tried different ones throughout the years. I have used golden polymer matte varnish which was great but was discontinued in my country. Then I started using duraclear ultra matte varnish and these are the babies I have varnished using it. I like the results tbh, hope it helps

Oh, what a beautiful baby. I’ll try to find the Duraclear. Thank you!

Thank you! Also I use ultra matte gel (liquitex) before I add the varnish. It adds an extra matte layer but be careful not to overdo it in case you use it. It leaves a rough texture which I really like but it may not be everyone’s cup of tea

Reborns of Jess on YouTube has a good technique for sealing Air Dry babies. I love the way they feel, there’s texture but it’s soft like velvet.
