I checked the spyglass and couldn’t find anything, but for those of you who dye and process your own mohair/alpaca, do you have a favorite or recommended brand of dye? Favorite colors?
I have never heard of using acid dye. I dye almost all of my alpaca, but I use permanent human hair dye. I’m going to watch this thread to find out if I’m supposed to be doing it differently.
I used to dye my own when I was able to root. Human hair dye will fade over time. Tea bath dying works well though for a lovely blonde and it does not fade. This is because a tea bath is a type of acid dye. Mohair is a fiber, not hair. Thus the reason human hair dye is not the proper dye to use. Fibers need to be dyed with acid dyes. I used to order a powdered acid dye off a seller on etsy and it was very easy to use but it has been so long ago I cannot remember the name. It may have been this one because the instructions look just like I remember and I do remember you mixed them with vinegar.
I use jacquard dyes! Just need to make sure it is all washed off at the end before rooting
Jacquard acid dye.
Jacquard was one that I am seeing a lot of, but there are quite a few different brands.
@jlesser and @Reborndaddyog do you mix colors or typically stick with just one color?
I never dyed mohair, but have read on this forum that human hair dye is not the right one to use for it as mohair is fiber, not hair.
I mixed them! I have only done browns and blacks but I mixed them to my personal taste in color
Thank you!
I haven’t tried mixing yet
I’ve tried 'em all! This company is my fave. Their quality is great, super friendly, small town company. And you can’t beat the price! One jar will last you twelve lifetimes…haha
Second favorite is Jaquard, least favorite is Prochem (I couldn’t get nice baby hair colors…but some interesting surprises! I like their products for other projects, just not baby hair.)
You definitely want to use acid dye-- which is not as scary as it sounds
@Rainbowbabies thank you so much! I’ll definitely check them out!
What I’m looking for is a very soft, light baby brown color. Most of the ones I’ve bought that said they were this color ended up being basically a light auburn… Do you have any recommendations for dyeing a pure white mohair a light brown?
It’s actually harder than it seems, right?! I’m still trying to find the perfect recipe. The Jaquard Brown actually might be your best bet. You can get everything from blonde to dark brown by adjusting how much dye you use. I’d recommend making a “dye stock” first. Mix a concentrated dye in a bottle, then use that to put into your dye bath. It’s easier to measure that way. Like using bullion cubes for soup base If you’re looking at Dharma brand (you can buy both on their website), I like Pecan Brown and Teddy Bear Brown.
Heyyyyy nice choices!! I love Fawn too. I live 30mn away from Dharma’s headquarters after a recent move, and going in there…I felt like I was meeting a famous person!
I totally get it after reading their bio! I totally and fully support small family businesses! Thank you SO much for your help
