8 inch full clay sculpt

I sculpted this 8-inch baby boy, but couldn’t get him smooth enough for molding with the clay I was using. I’m starting over using a firmer clay, but wanted to show him off anyway. I love him and am keeping him for myself!

I haven’t known who to ask about this question I have. Maybe you can help me. When a person molds a doll from clay, and, I suppose, bake it somehow? Then, do they have to do something else to it before they can paint it and it will be done?

I’m mostly looking at making mine into silicone. Are you asking about the moldmaking process, or just finishing a clay baby?

I guess that is my question. Is it possible to make a clay sculpt and then finish it some way, paint it, etc. And it would be permanent like the regular doll kits.

Yeah, there is a way! OOAK clay babies have been around way longer than reborns, and I’ve seen a bunch of them on Etsy and eBay. I think you can just use acrylic paints and then seal them. If you look on the DollFan forum, there are some pictures of clay work (by people like Carol Kneisley and Lorna Miller Sands). I think vinyl reborns are more popular now, but OOAKs are still around.

One more question. Is it possible to put a cloth body on a clay sculpt?

Yep! You just need to build up a flange like you’d have on a vinyl doll.

Cool! I appreciate the info. I am not at all interested in sculpting dolls as I don’t think I would ever be able to do that. It is just not something I care to do. BUT, I was interested in how it is done. So, again, thanks!
