I just ordered a Caleb parts and body and am going to try my hand at making a reborn for the 1st time.
What all do I need to do this besides the body parts, the body, mohair and stuffing?
I know I’ll need paint, but not really what kind, my mum has a bunch of acrylic paints she uses for her doll faceups but she paints on resin dolls mostly so I don’t know if those paints would work or not? Is there someplace I can buy just enough paint to do this if they won’t work?
You need Genesis Heat Set Paints or Air Dry paints specifically made for reborning. The acrylic paints are probably not the correct ones and it is recommended not to use acrylic paints on for reborn dolls. You can purchase the Bountiful Baby Premixed Genesis Heat Set Paint Set. It’s great for beginners. But then you’ll need an oven as well. You’ll also need glass beads to weigh your reborn.
Other ladies can add on what else you maybe need. I having difficultly remembering or thinking of items.
Regular acrylic paint won’t work for these vinyl dolls, You are going to need either Genesis Heat Set Paints or speciality air dry paints crafted for vinyl dolls. It is not a cheap hobby to start. You might want to do some research on paint and what you can expect to accomplish with them. Ask questions, there are many members willing to help you. I can’t give any advice on air dry paints as I use GHSP, Others can help with the air dry medium.
My recommendation as to what you need is to check the contents of the complete kits. I started with one of those, and used every item in it. There’s are a lot of small but important things. I did not care for the razor hair cutter, and have not used it, but everything else was useful. Best wishes on your new endeavor.
I am a fan of the new fx air dry paints by Melissa George. A less expensive starting point for airdry is luminaire. I used them and like them too. It just takes a lot longer to get the deeper color. You also need a sealer and possibly a medium if you go with luminaire. I dont do heat paints anymore. You also need glue like e6000, pantyhose, polyfil, and weighting material. I use polypellets.
Yes, air dry is a great way to go. And it dries quickly, allowing you to paint faster and there are no fumes! I didn’t have an oven to bake in, either, and I am used to using acrylic so I opted for the air dry paints.
When I first started reborning in 2010. I could not wrap my brain around putting vinyl in the oven. I was afraid to even try. Therefore, I bought air dry paints for reborning. My very first doll came out far better than I could have imagined. I loved her. Even though I used the recommended sealer, her paint came off. Well, that was enough for me. I headed right to this site to buy Genesis Heat Set Paints.
