New/thrifted, washed/unwashed, dark/light, diapers/no diapers, etc

I’m always interested in what other people are doing with their reborns so I can learn from them.

I’ve noticed so many differences when it comes to clothing/items used near the dolls; extremes and people that are more in the middle. For example, I hardly ever buy new clothes for my reborns, but am always buying thrifted items. I ALWAYS wash new or thrifted clothes/blankets, etc… before I put them on/use them with my dolls. I never dress my dolls in anything darker than grey, and that also goes for any items I may use with them. I don’t put diapers on any of my dolls because I’ve read they can leave marks on the doll and I don’t want to take a chance. I am probably on the more extreme, in that I am very careful with my dolls (while still enjoying them).

So how about you? I’d love to hear it! Share your reasons too, if you’d like!

It sounds like your sharing from a collectors point of view. Am I correct?

Yes, but artists who do box openings may have a point of view too; depending on what they send with their dolls.

For my own reborns I am like you. Barely no new clothes but a lot of thrift store shopping. Sometimes if I found a nice like new piece I sent it with a doll I sell (I always disclose it).
I have begun to switch to clothe diapers for my own dolls.
I also don’t use pacifier, or other accessories. I have a lot of baby blankets tho ! And I crochet them clothes, socks and hats.
I send lovey or small stuff animal with my most expensive dolls.

I have a mixture of new outfits and ones I picked up from the thrift stores but either way they are washed before I put them on my dolls. Me personally I have found if I wash a darker colored outfit multiple times making sure all excess dye is out I have no issues with dye transfer whatsoever. I also put diapers on them to fill the clothes out some and they just look adorable in diapers in general lol.

I barely use pacifiers with my dolls either although I like to use them as props with a cute pacifier holder.

And I, like you, crochet item for them which I wash first too.

I’ve got a mix of thrifted and new clothes. Whatever is cute and cheap.
I always wash thrifted, and often wash new as well. I don’t stick to light or dark, I’ve got both, but with darker colors I put while clothes underneath to protect the vinyl.
I do put diapers on them, as I think it makes them look and feel more realistic when they have that extra padding there. But I only use cloth diapers as they don’t start to pill over time.

Not to sound like a snob (I’m not) but mine are all new. I think that is because our Goodwill stopped having the precious little baby outfits they used to have. We don’t have other thrift places. BUT, I do buy on sale. I get good deals, I think. I wouldn’t have a problem with used if I like the outfit. If I ever put anything dark on a baby, such as jeans, I would put tights under it to protect the vinyl.

When I got my first reborn last May, when the lockdowns were more strict, I bought a lot of used baby clothes from eBay.

Our Goodwill stores mostly closed and the ones remaining don’t really have anything good.

That stinks you don’t have any thrift shops near you!

As an artist, I only send out new clothing. People have come to expect some sort of box opening regardless of how little or big but one thing is sure, they will complain about all used clothing. I have seen it too many times…

Oh, if I were selling I would definitely use new clothing. But I don’t sell, and my babies are for me. So, if I were to find something used I really liked I wouldn’t mind.

I have a closet full n then some of new clothes. I also buy from the goodwill. I wouldn’t buy anything that I wouldn’t put on a real baby. I’m very particular about the stuff I buy from the goodwill. It has to look particularly brand new before I buy it. I have found some nice new items with tags still on them. Anything I get from the goodwill with out tags I wash it. If it’s new with tags, I spray it with tide antibacterial spray. I do not wash the new clothes. I’ll let the new mom or dad wash the new clothes. Because I have some many clothes, I’ve been sending extra clothes just to get rid of some n make more room for more clothes. I’m addicted to buying clothes.

I wash everything. Whether it’s for my babies or to send home. New or used. Usually twice and in hot water.

For my babies I’ll buy dark things because I know to put clothing between the dark clothes and the vinyl. Send home, not so much because I don’t trust anyone. :joy:

I buy new and used and send a mix of both but the used has to literally look new or be new with tags.

For those of you that buy thrifted clothes, where do you get them from? I get mine from Savers, Island Thrift, and garage sales when it’s summer. I used to buy from eBay when COVID first started.

Garage sales when it’s nice out and I check goodwill every now and then but here lately the quality has gone down and the prices have gone up. A formula stained onesie for $4.50 is not my cup of tea lol

Once Upon a Child. I’ve gotten a few things from good will but they don’t have much around me and you really have to dig and I just don’t have the patience. But I LOVE once upon a child. Most of my clothes come from there, Carter’s clearance racks, Kate Quinn, and Amazon! … and target and Walmart

I buy vintage outfits from Thrift Stores and from ladies on here. I buy new clothes also. I use diapers and am currently trying to switch to cloth diapers only. A lot of my dolls that go out are in a costume of some kind, new or thrift. I love pacis, and I will crochet a few things. As I am beginning to paint less and acquire a larger Collection, more clothes, diapers, shoes are new instead of from the Thrift Store ( no GW here). But I am addicted to buying baby shoes. I bought 4 no 5 pair of shoes today, lol!

I love thrifting for household items and clothes, but haven’t been doing it at all during Covid. The vast majority of my own wardrobe was used, bought from thrift stores or consignment shops. I wouldn’t hesitate to dress reborns in clean used clothes in good shape.

That being said, because I got my Bindi orangutan sculpt during the pandemic, and because she only fits preemie clothes and I had zero baby clothes, everything of hers has been brand new and bought online. She only wears a t-shirt and diaper cover and headband, since anything else will matt the hair on her limbs. I don’t have a whole layette for her, not even a change of outfit. (There are different color hair bows but white is the go-to.)

I just recently got a human reborn and it came with mostly untagged clothes. If clothes are in good shape, once they are washed they are technically used anyway, so it doesn’t matter to me. And all clothes for my reborns get washed by me even if they look clean or new on arrival. The only exception might be something both handmade and white. Don’t want to risk anything coming apart.

I’ve upgraded all disposal diapers to Thirsties brand “diaper covers” instead. I put them directly on the doll without an absorbent layer underneath. Then I don’t have to be concerned about disposables discoloring the doll and they don’t need the constant saggy adjustment either.

I personally don’t enjoy the physical act of changing clothes on dolls. But having one that fits commonly found sizes might be a game changer. After it feels safer for me to do so, I’ll probably be getting more clothes for them at thrift stores.

Although I wouldn’t hesitate to indulge in something new and luxurious for them, either. They won’t outgrow it, stain it, or wear it out. You don’t have to be practical when they aren’t hard on their things and are out on display.

Bindi is on permanent display since her hair makes her a bit of a touch-me-not. The human reborn gets held sometimes and is otherwise covered. Partner doesn’t like seeing an abandoned baby, it freaks him out.

Have you shown Bindi? I’d love to see, or can you post a link to it? My Binki is done but is for the Cake Smash/Alternative Parade.

Linking is complicated. Lol
You can see her in posts:

and

That last one shows paci sizes comparison.
My Bindi was prepainted, prerooted and has the newer, larger head.
She was reborned by Jlesser. :slightly_smiling_face:
