When I first started…I Didnt find this forum for about a year. In that time… I had never seen another reborn and only learned my the Denise Pratt dvd.
I thought my dolls were great. I did customs. I had no idea what I was doing. I still feel really bad about selling those dolls.
Thank God I found this forum and helpful guidelines and standards.
This took a lot of humility to admit. Kudos!
I just finished a custom order that basically broke all of the “rules” of reborning (18” hair on a toddler, moles, etc). Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I say paint however you want. What may not be attractive to one person may be lovely to another.
At the risk of hurting anyone’s feelings, I have to disagree with your statement that new artists shouldn’t be doing customs. The reason I disagree is this…who tells you when your good enough? talented enough? It’s not like you’d receive an email that says “Congratulations! You are now good enough!” I’m not trying to be rude, and I realize there are a lot of newer artists that use prototype pics to advertise THEIR art. That is deceitful. And wrong. But I’m only accountable for me. As long as I know I’m representing myself and my art to my truest ability, that’s all that matters. If the customer is happy with their baby and the price they paid for it, then that is all I could ask for. The beauty of art is that there ARE no standards. If someone finds beauty in it, then it is beautiful!
This is what I actually said. So, I pretty much agree with what you said about new artists doing customs:

98% of new artists want to do customs because they don’t want to pay out of their own pocket for supplies. So they use prototype photos. Advertise and get the buyer to pay for supplies. Then they send out sub par work. The buyer is soured on the whole reborns thing because they think we all do that.
Or. The artist comes here wanting to know how to make a sculpt that looks like the photos they stole and use. And get upset when we tell them its not that easy. It isn’t a get rich quick scheme and it takes time and talent.
This is what I’ve seen. Over and over and over.
Very few are good enough right out if the gate.
