So this is something I’ve been thinking about for awhile now. This post is for all of us, artists and collectors.
Artist who sell, when do you decide to list a doll and why?
For example, maybe you tend to work on them over the weekend and list them right away on Monday morning.
Or maybe you enjoy them for a few weeks and figure out which one you like the least in your nursery to be listed next.
Maybe you list one you know to be a hot seller when you could use the money right away, and list less popular ones when it’s less crucial that you sell immediately.
Collectors, you can chime in on this conversation too!
When and why do you end up letting go of a doll?
Do you run out of space, or you just need the money?
Maybe you just didn’t bond with that one like you thought you would, or it brings back sad memories for you.
Maybe you’re just tired of dealing with it’s 3/4 limbs or something.
Just looking for discussion on everyone’s personal or professional reasons when and why dolls get listed.
Nearly all of us has been in this situation. What are your reasons?
I usually list within a week of completion. I do wait to list until I’m going to have a few days off of work, so I know I’ll be able to ship the doll quickly if it sells. In my limited experience Thursdays and Fridays are good days to list.
I list ASAP because I make the dolls for the enjoyment of making them, dressing them, and photographing them but I do not enjoy clutter in my house which most collections of absolutely anything appear to me to be. (Apologies to all the collectors of all the things😬)
I have two dolls that were intentional keepers and several hanging around watching me paint because they were listed too high or too low and haven’t sold. I also live with a self proclaimed “Dragon” who has a sizable treasure hoard of a Star Wars collection in the basement but I never have to look at it or dust it if I never go downstairs.
I don’t depend on selling for an income but once I’ve listed them I’m ready to move them. You hear that the right buyer will come along eventually but I believe if the doll isn’t selling it’s probably not listed at the correct price point.
I use Genesis, so once the doll is completed and assembled, I do the photo shoots and work on my eBay template for the baby. Then I list it on eBay. Most of the time when I list my babies on my F B page, no sales happen. I may get a bunch of inquiries, but no continued contact from the inquirer. I sell most successfully on eBay.
I list when I am able to get photoshoot. It’s not as easy as it seem. It’s hard to get the right light, the right clothes or the time.
I hate putting a doll together so they often sit there a while until I bring the courage to weight them and assemble them.
I love painting but if I could hired someone for doing the rest I will be happy !
I create to sell only, I don’t keep my dolls. What usually holds me up is the photo shoot. I try to do them within a couple of days after completion. I tend to list on Monday or Tuesday around 6:00pm. My stratigy with that is it is the time people get home from work and go on line. If I list in the morning by evening my listing will be buried under all kinds of other listings. I could be way off base with my thinking but it seems to work for me.
I make to sell and sometimes I’m motivated to get a photoshoot and the baby for sale the next day but often times I just don’t have time to get a photoshoot done right away so it may be delayed a week or two
I have no set time or routine when I list my babies. They get listed once they are finished and I get around to taking their pictures and listing them. I usually try and do it soon after they are finished, but don’t always get around to it. Also depends if I am waiting on any outfits or anything like that.
I am with you. I want to make the babies and I want someone else to do everything else. I don’t like the photo shoot at all and I wish I had a manager to take care of all the business end
I prefer to list mine as soon as they are finished and I’ve done their photo shoot and chosen which photos to use. I show them on my nursery page on FB and then list them on Reborns.com. I’m not playing Ebay’s games any more. Some of the ones I’ve sold have been “keepers” that I’ve decided to finally list (my babies are displayed but not redressed often and stay in original condition). I like to always keep several as a sort of portfolio of my current style of painting and that changes over time, so those that don’t look like the way I’m painting at the time also eventually get sold. I’ve done portrait dolls of my 3 children and when I’ve found kits that seem more like them and I’ve replaced them on occasion too…replaced ones are sold. I’ve gifted a few and given a few to be used in sales for good causes as well. I guess I am pretty random about which ones I sell and how, but I can’t keep too many or I’ll turn into a doll hoarder. I’m already teetering on that edge with baby clothing, so I can’t let myself fall over by keeping too many babies!
I make them to sell. I usually list them within a week or two. I go through a lot of clothes, trying them on, to find the ones that are the most flattering with the skin tones. I hate photoshoots and tend to procrastinate on those. Huxley, however, got to stick around for awhile because she’s one of my all time favorites and I wanted to enjoy her for a bit. I’m glad I did because she was my fastest sale ever.
I find that listing on eBay between 8 and 9 on Sunday nights works best for me. I think people are home more on Sundays, to get ready for the work week, and are more likely to have a little time to browse eBay before bed.
