Customer Wants To Talk on the Phone :/

I’m not a big phone person. I talk to family, my best friend, and that’s about it. I don’t have a problem in person, and I can be pretty social, but a customer has asked to talk on the phone before I begin her order. I don’t want her to call me and text me all the time. I’ve had some pretty crazy customers. But she has a pretty big order, and I would like to be accommodating. What would you do?

I’d ask for her phone number and call her. Just tell her that, for personal reasons, you don’t give out your private phone number. Email is good enough for ongoing communication.

You can tell her you don’t normally talk on the phone with clients but you’ll make an exception this one time…or, tell her you only communicate via email so everything is documented.

If you make an exception and call her, that may open the door to her calling you more often since your phone number will most likely pop up on her caller ID.

I didn’t think about caller ID.

I use email only. Then everything’s in writing. I never use phone for business. Unless I’m on a kit hunt with suppliers. …
I mean I never hunt for kits I have plenty. Yea… Yea…that’s my story

I had a problem customer and gave her my phone number. She would end up sometimes calling me daily. Then when I blocked her on facebook (after almost a year of ongoing emotional abuse and manipulation) she would call me on my phone. It took another year to get that I wasn’t going to answer.

Sorry to hear that, but that’s exactly what I mean. I’ve dealt with one super crazy online. I don’t need it on my phone too.

I would block my number before calling. I believe you can block it by dialing *67, then the number. Try calling another number first to make sure it works.

MsMimi’s idea is a good one. Sometimes it is necessary to talk to someone on the phone when you just can’t quite get what they mean or vice versa.

Yes, it was a nightmare. I’m the kind of person that will do a lot to make a person happy. She taught me how to say no and how to finally be able to say enough is enough.

Thanks! I also forgot about that option.

I would star 67 it. And also let her know its being recorded so you make sure you dont miss anything then send her and email to approve all what was said and agreed upon. So that way your both protected. Because she can make up anything if its not documented.

Sorry but I would have been a person that would have wanted to talk on the phone. I would not want to do that to cause problems just not computer inclined. I hope she’s not a problem for you .

Yes, I forgot about how important it is to have details documented. Thanks for reminding me!

No problem. She could either be someone who is better on the phone. Not computer inclined or a crazy scammer. And if she is a scammer all that recording will have her not wanting to deal with you.

I would call but that’s because I prefer to have a closer understanding of what my customer wants and more so then not that makes a repeat customer or at least in my experience it has.

NO CALLAS, they may bother your family

I would say no and use the reason of needing documentation.

I would do the call and text free app. You get a free number when u download the app to your phone, call her and then tell her you are going to send her an email with all the info and details of the call so she can confirm it, to protect the both of you. This way if she is going to call you daily or harass you in any way you can just delete the app and she can’t call or bother you if that is even the case!

That’s a great idea!

The very last thing I have time for is sitting on the phone listening to customers, so nope…no calling. On the rare occasion that I accept a custom order, it is all handled through email or pm’s through FB everything is documented, cut and dry…none of the “but I said I wanted this or that” blah, blah, blah. Give me the written word.
