I have a issue with chalkiness when I apply Heat Seat Matte Varnish. It only happens to the inner eyes, or lips. I don’t understand why this happens. It never happens to my limbs just the face. I was told it could be not baking long enough. The more I back the chalkier it gets. I tried to correct it with thinning medium & thinner. It usually helps but I made it worst. should I bake again or perhaps apply another layer?
I bake at least 2 times for matte, often 3. If you still get chalkiness, I think you may have applied it too thickly in spots. You might try a small brush or clean sharp wedge corner to pounce when in smaller corners. Make sure not to leave too much.
Just curious as to why you use matte on lips?
I replied to you but it didn’t seem to post. I either post something multiple times or not at all. I haven’t quite figured the forum yet. I don’t remember all that I said. But I corrected most of the chalkiness for the most part. There was a suggestion to turn my oven up. I usually bake at 225 for 10 minutes flipping the parts at about 4 to 5 minutes in. But I turned my oven to just above 250 and bake for 10 minutes flipping the parts about 4 to 5 minutes in. Before when I turned my oven up to that temperature my oven thermometer said it reached about 275 to 280 in 10 minutes. I didn’t think that was safe for the vinyl. But it’s all good. But it’s a little chalky in a small part of the eye like the crease in the bottom portion of the eye that seems to happen often and inside of the mouth or crease where the lips connect. I don’t think it’s from the matte varnish because I don’t apply it to those areas. It could be that I applied the GHSP too thickly in those areas.
Your separate oven thermometer should show 265. Generally recommended to bake 8 minutes. Many people do 2 or 3 bakes for matte or varnishes.
If at 225 your thermometer was not reaching 265, it was most likely underbaked. Glad you were able to fix most of it. I’d be very careful baking at the level you are now as when it’s not matte medium and just paint you are likely to get a very shiny baby.
Oh thank you. I lost my oven thermometer. I’ll have to get a new one so I can be sure about the temperature. I may not need it that high. I definitely don’t want a shiny or melted baby.
