I may try this. I’m having trouble with my newest bottle of Gamsol not wanting to flash off. I wonder if there is water in it because suddenly my mixtures in jars are separating immediately. I’m afraid to buy a new bottle and have the same issue! It’s causing paint runs because of the slow drying time.
I think I am lost in your response. This post is mostly about air dry paints. You are talking about heat set. What is it you wanted to try?
I am replying to earlier in the thread about the eco house citrus thinner you suggested. My bad, I thought the thread was about any alternatives to odorless thinner in general based on the OPs sensitivity/original question. I did not see myself that far off topic
I screenshot what I replied to:
OH now I know what you are talking about. Lord I had a hard day at work today and my brain is ready to go to sleep! I love the Citrus Thinner. It is a bit more oily I think than mineral spirits. Thus it takes a little longer to flash off. I paint 2 kits at once and while one is flashing off I am painting on the other.
Ok, thanks! At this point that may be ok because my new Gamsol batch is taking HOURS to flash off. Idk if they have changed it or what. I was painting 3 at a time and it wasn’t dry at all by the time I came back around.
I have been known to put a kit in the oven that still looks wet. LOL!
I do that a lot but this is so wet it is creating runs even with the thinnest wash. I bought it from Amazon. Maybe I should purchase from an art store just in case of contamination. I think it was sealed but I can’t remember.
that is really weird…
My paint mixtures look like oil and water. Usually it takes a week of vacation to make them look that way. This happens in 20 minutes. I sure hope the formula did not change.
That would suck! I’m sorry yours is faulty hopefully it is just a fluke.
Either it has changed or you got something from Amazon that is not the actual product. I do wonder about some stuff on
Amazon from their sellers…
My husband just went to Hobby Lobby and bought me some new Gamsol so I will find out soon!
Wait, No dust with ultimate fusion? The dust on mine is horrible! So bad, I had Even looked into a diy flow hood.
I agree there’s almost no dust sticking to this paint. That was one of the few things I liked with it.
I didn’t know why my house is so dusty could it be that I live in Windy Oklahoma, or the fact that my neighborhood has been a construction zone for the past 20yrs, or that my house has 3 doors that when open, create a lil vortex in the kitchen? The other day I looked at my fruit bowl and thought, I never known anyone with dusty apples
With Ultimate Fusion, of course you might get dust in your paint mix while you’re going if it’s in your air, but when it dries the dust just lifts away from the doll with a quick wipe from your hand, and doesn’t stick.
(This only happens though if you use distilled water to dilute your paint. If you have any sort of medium or sealer - except antibead and blendflow - in it, then the dust doesn’t wipe away and it behaves like typical acrylic.)
I need to make a demonstration of this because it’s hard to explain how amazing it is!
What I can’t fathom is how everyone is not getting paint fading using the UF with only water? In my experience of trying those paints mine faded.
That’s why I don’t use them anymore, they fade so fast.
Idk why some fade and some don’t. It’s not on 100% of UF dolls, but it is a huge problem for many. We talk about it in our groups. There was a new UF red formula made to try to help this. The general consensus for most of us is that vinyl absorption is a factor too, but the mechanics are unknown. I think primer is a big part of it. I am also using UV light blocking layers from other brands on top to help, but it hasn’t been long enough to see if they stand the test of time.
(Also for the record I haven’t sold any UF dolls since learning of the red fade issue. When I sell again, I will not sell anything guaranteeing the colors until I figure it out.)
Back when I was using air dry and tried them I admit I loved their performance. I did a lovely baby solely with them. But I found on a baby I kept here and did the creases with UF that all the creases completely faded as well as the blushing I had used from UF. I could not in good faith ever sell a doll made with those paints for that reason. To be honest, I found that problem with most of the ready made reborn paints if they were thinned with only water. Just like any other acrylic paint. This was why I went to using only Golden fluids and Liquitex acrylic Gouache paints. They both have such strong pigment loads they held up much better over time. I have babies here in my crib that lighten slightly but did not fade.
Truthfully speaking though, it takes more work and attention to things like priming, not over thinning with water and using mediums in the paints to get any acrylic paint to last longer on vinyl. Then you have more sheen and tack to contend with which also leads to more dust. This is the whole reason I happily went back to Genesis paints when I finally found a solvent I could use. I have 2 whole boxes full of Genesis so not worried about running out any time soon. However, I am watching the new heat set paints being sold now days to see if they all are going to hold up long term like Genesis. I suspect they will since they are not broken down by water but time will tell.
