Wow @AnnieSokay. Loved the articles. That second one was really something. Very educational, that’s for sure.

I’m still plucking away at biracial tones, have made it no where near the darker complexions that I wish I could paint. This is where I feel genesis users might have a bit of an advantage.

Would you mind sharing why BB Pearl would be considered to be black face? Is it the way someone painted her or about the kit itself? I painted two.

I make AA dolls along with Caucasian. I find them much more artistically fun. All those beautiful colors that I don’t use typically in Caucasian skin tones.

Here is one of my recent AA babies.

I didn’t understand the Pearl reference either, not at all. I was also very confused, then someone sent me pix of BB’s Pearl, as in Pearl and Kiwi, the gorilla sculpts, not the Realborn baby with the sucky lip…!
I like some of the animal sculpts, but since I don’t think of animals as people that wouldn’t have ever crossed my mind.
Although, after being shown what that looks like with a completely dark painted face, hair covered with long sleeves and a hat, I see how that could read blackface without much stretch of the imagination.
I wouldn’t have gotten it without that visual reference, now I’m kind of in shock.

My first baby dolls of color were cabbage patch kids. I wasn’t a fan of many dolls that I saw when I was little bc the coloring was exaggerated. When I found reborns I was ecstatic bc I actually saw babies that resembled members of my family. I market my babies as AA/Ethnic/Biracial. This is mainly for search purposes bc this is what it seems people type in according to SEO. I have 6 kids and all of them looked different except two who looked the same as infants. One of my daughters was born with blonde hair and blue eyes. Now her hair is reddish brown and her eyes are brown. People of color come in so many skin tones that I think it is okay to color your babies whatever color you want as long as it is respectful of the people you’re trying to represent. I’ve seen some things like golliwogs and Mr. Popo that I find insensitive but I don’t think they should be destroyed. History should not be destroyed, nor should it be elevated if it’s bad. It should be placed in museums with information where people can see it and understand so as it’s hopefully not repeated. Sorry so long winded. All of this is of course just my opinion.

@Miss_Kitty had an awful interaction with someoone on FB marketplace I think, with her prepainted gorilla from BB. :frowning:

I just looked up gollywog to remind myself what that was… That’s supposed to be a person?? It looks like a burned gingerbread cookie wearing a suit. :no_mouth:

Never heard of Mr. Popo and looked that up too. This is from a modern Anime character from a show called Ball Z… He is supposed to be a genie or a deity.
Looks really out of place compared to the style of the other characters. I don’t know if being featureless and black is supposed to add to the mystery or if that’s supposed to indicate race. :woman_shrugging:t2:

This EXACTLY!!! I have a shop on Etsy and about two years ago they removed anything that was ā€˜Aunt Jemima’ themed and other items along the same theme.

I’m not exactly sure what the place is for items like that, as they were not kind depictions of people of color. However, it is a part of history that needs to be acknowledged so it is not repeated.

Being a child, and not yet knowing anything about racism, I always imagined Aunt Jemima as a grandma with a soft lap for cozy cuddling.

I do, too. I watch his YouTube vids.

That reminds me of Mrs.Butterworth, the glass syrup bottle doll that came to life in the tv ads. I don’t know what her race was. She came in two colors, golden and clear. The kids were so excited about her and she seemed so nice.

Yep it is goodbye to Mrs. Butterworth and Uncle Ben.

That is true.

As well as the Cream of Wheat guy. They aren’t certain that he was based on a real chef, but the ads in the past portrayed him as so ignorant that that logo also had to go.

I just looked up what a gollywog was and I’m disgusted. Wow.

I’m glad that we’re all having this discussion though. I’m learning about different points of view that I never saw before.

The gollywog use to be the motif for a major company in the UK who made Jam, it was removed many years ago due to it being so offensive but growing up as a child I remember it, they also made the motif into dolls! Thank goodness it was removed and the dolls banned.

Again, as a child not understanding the significance, I thought this was just a black Raggedy Andy and thought he was cute. God bless the innocence of children, huh?
