Any tips... Wish me luck

I just bought my first set of heat set. Any thoughts on best thinner and convection oven? Any tips on anything would be nice. I have only used air dry and want to give this a try… So nervous… It’s like I will be reborning for the first time.

Do you still cook food in the oven. Just a towel no poly. I will look for the Mona Lisa. Thank you

I agree with the no poly/firestarter! Since it caught fire…and the other piece was melted on bottom. It was supposed to be the premium stuff. As for my oven, the temp seems to vary too much on my big one for me to be comfortable using it again. I get it to 275 and put something in, check it five minutes later and the temp isn’t even 250. I thought it was the thermometer but gave up on the baking for now. Well, except for baking elf ears. Even then I did two 15 minute sessions, not a straight half hour.

I use the mona lisa odorless paint thinner. I use the mona lisa paint brush cleaner to strip dolls! It works as a thinning agent too??? learn something new every day!
I use my oven at 265 for 8 minutes to set paint and for 12 minutes for the matte varnish, flipping the limbs about 1/2 way through the varnish bake.

Mainly it’s a game of trial and error to find out what works best for you.

My advice:
Many thin layers is the key. There are many possibilities for paint thiner, odorless mineral spirits works great, but smells strong when you bake it. BUT, I find if you use sea sponges for mottling you achieve crisper circles.

I started using this. it’s really thick and blends beautifully, no running no streaks. No smell at all.

I found and tried this one from walmart for $50! It works great.

Here is a Rina head, lots of room in there. I cook her head and whole body in there. Keep everything in the center not touching and don’t want away.

I don’t use these textured sheets anymore, they can leave marks on the vinyl. And I don’t use polyfil, it can melt into the vinyl. But they fit one whole baby or even toddler kits.

Look for smooth silicone backing sheets with no texture.

question when using the silicone sheet do you use anything else or just the sheet plain? I looked at getting one but was uncertain. Thanks for sharing.

I just use just a thick sheet, I also use a large silicone cake pan. But if you use a bigger oven the thinner silicone sheets may swag between the metal bars and create pressure points on the vinyl, so you may want to use it on a baking sheet, but I never tried. Target has them online for $9.99.

I started using these when i made a Victoria by Sheila Micheal. It was an ordeal to heat set paint without melting the kit’s soft silicone vinyl stuff.

I just bought that oven, good to know it works. Just that sheet thing and no towel, will look into it.

I bake in my home oven and when I want to cook food in it I always do a self cleaning run thru. Nothing I know of can live or last in that kind of heat. I bake mine on a cookie sheet with a double layer of the quilt batting I have scraps left over from my hand made quilts. I have never had a fire and the only time I ever had a melting accident was one time I tiled the cookie sheet and an arm fell off and hit the burner. My husband was right there and tho he would never admit it he bumped my arm. LOL I screamed get her arm she is getting burned. Now in the heat of the moment this did not sound like sn unreasonable thing to say. Now it sounds a little silly. I was not sure how to fix this sooo I made it into a burn and I have taught a child abuse class with it. Always a way to '“fix” things.

LOL, Debra! Glad to know I’m not the only one that reacts as if they are real babies! I can’t stand to have them uncomfortable or have their faces covered (well, they do need to breathe, don’t they?!!) Probably why I had a hard time baking the poor things. I’m still debating on whether to give the heat set another try or just send them to my cousin. Income tax came in so maybe I’ll invest in a small oven and try again…without the flammable batting! And don’t make the mistake I did of laying the head down so it doesn’t topple. When I did that, the head got deformed. I was able to stuff it and reheat it to get it back to normal but that was a panic moment!

Ok, we’ll burnt/melted a bit of a shin, big toe, little toe and a heel… And the blanket I used got Burt also. Got a smokey room after the first bake, lol. Then realized I set the heat wrong, oops. This bakeing babies is nerv wrecking!!! Not to noticeable though. The mineral spirits smells, though it says odorless, going to switch to the white bottle and see how I like it. I am working on kaylyn and Kadence at the same time because they are so small the two heads and arms fit in for one bake and the legs in another. I think they will be done soon, I hope. Wish me more luck!!!
